I''m looking for some advice on project set up. The reason is two fold. There is just too much code going on an keeping tabs on it is starting to be a headache. But second, there are a few post''s which have dropped hints as to how people here at this forum set up their working environment. Meaning: writing a script to set class path and so forth. I have to admit, I didn''t pay much attention to the discussion when it was posted because the scope of work I was under didn''t really warrant it, but now it does. I use javaDoc extensively but beyond packages and keeping test from working stuff, etc. Does any one have a system they would like to share that they think would work. I realize some software exists, like Maven, or Ant, but this is sort of part of the problem. How to decide which and what peice of software is needed/helpful without damaging my current working environment. How to set up a roll-back of some kind, or something. Any suggestions? I use the sorting that eclipse has built in (package wise) this allows for easy browsing inbetween all classes that I''ve created and I most of the time know exactly where the code is, but then again I''ve never had a major projekt going... only upto 15-20 source files as yet in one project.....

Interesting insight. Being that I''m not a user of eclipse, I often wonder what it has to offer, seeing that several people have recommended the IDE.

Thanks,

Eclipse is a godsend for project management. The refactoring tool is A+ and improves with each release. For example, renaming something (such as a package or source file) can be easily accomplished in a couple of clicks - with the options of updating javadoc comments, regular comments, and non-java files in addition to the source dependencies. I find that very useful in the early stages of a project when the design tends to fluctuate, but it''s even better near the end of the project when you suddenly have to restructure a subsystem or two.

Eclipse also makes creating jar files a cinch. This is also a very useful tool. For example, my current project requires some of the packages to be separated from the core jar to so that the core contains no dependencies upon AWT or Swing. Some IDEs would require a separate project for each jar, and working on the command line would require lots of typing or a complex ant/maven script. In Eclipse, it''s a simple matter of selecting checkboxes and clicking the OK button.

I could ramble on about Eclipse all day. It''s just such a great timesaver.

So does eclipse have a command line, or some other substitue, that can run simple macros or something, without a full blown api for plug-ins?

Eclipse supports the use of Ant, so you can use part of the power of Ant for some things if you want and then part of the power of Eclipse for others.

I highly recommend Eclipse as well.
