great engine

Original Post
Hello, all! I''ve written a nice 3D engine and now I would like to sell it''s source code
The engine is great! It has all main feachers of any 3D engine and is written in such way,
that you can take almost any of it''s part(implementing a particular feacher) and insert it
into the source of any other application.
You can use it as a ready product or like a great tutorial.
VC++ 6.0 project is included.
The price is VERY LOW! 20$ !!!
Here is a brief list of engine''s feachers:
--- OpenGL manager
--- Free look camera view (time based movement)
--- Loads BMP, JPG, TGA textures
--- Loads compressed DDS files. Supported formats: DXT1, DXT3, DXT5
--- Multitexturing
--- Supports 3D textures (very nice for dynamic lighting)
--- Dynamic cubemapping
--- Loads 3DS files
--- Load MilkShape3D .ms3d file
--- Supports OCTREE space partition
--- Vertex array object buffers usage (for fast geometry rendering)
--- The engine supports offscreen pixel buffers
--- Collision detection
--- Classes for using texture, bitmap and vector fonts.
--- Curved PN_Triangles
--- Occlusion query tests
You can see the screenshots here: http://tryengine.narod.ru/screenshots.htm

Hmm, and how much of your engine''s source code is taken from GameTutorials.com? I would guess a whole lot, but sorry if I''m wrongly accusing you..
Is this supposed to be a joke? Because that's exactly what I think of when I read this thread. Why pay $20 to you for this when we can get code and/or tutorials on how to do these things for free? Probably most if not all of these things can be found with full code on gametutorials.com. Did you just take a bunch of tutorial code and slap it in one project in MSDEV and call it an engine worth $20? I'm sorry but that's what it looks like to me. Why would I pay someone $20 for code that I could throw together in a week tops? Actually with all the tutorials around now days, I don't see why any one else would take much longer themselves. You're going to have to do more (and by more I don't mean taking more code from a tutorial site and slapping it all together in the project) if you expect people to pay you money.

Err, how can you expect people to buy that when you can''t even spell feature?

More to the point, the screenshots aren''t that impressive. For me to want to pay $20 for it it would need to do more than The Nebula Device or Neoengine, or even Irrlicht or OGRE as it only seems to be a graphics engine.
Perhaps I''m wrong though. Is there a demo game free for download that shows us all the impressive features of the engine?

you guys sure want the world if you give someone 20 bucks. While I agree that there maybe ''better'' choices, dont knock someone cause they are offering you a service/product.
Some people actually dont care about building the enigne but rather just would focus on the game itself. Look at the popularity of Mods.
Personally ... i want to write my own engine. Cause I just dont want to waste time but I want to LEARN what I''m doing and get to the nuts and bolts of it.
but damn ... 20 bucks is NOTHING

For all you bashers and basher-bashers
Tourque Engine 100$ if I''m correct

i dont know how you guys can judge his engine with only watching 3 screenshots. who told you he took all his sources from gametutorials? the screenshots? check his last words: "3DS model and skybox textures were taken from www.gametutorials.com" im no artist, i try to code my own engine too .. if i would present some screenshots i would do the same, take it from somewhere (because im not able to do them).
and i want to see the person who can do this in one week (because i dont think he just wrapped all tutorials together, you still need you structure your engine that all fits together..)

Hey,
$20 bucks is not bad for something that does that....
But then again, the one i''m going to release in a couple of months [already] does the following:
-- Per pixel lighting
-- Models with bones
-- Compiler for shaders and games with virtual machine
-- Quake III bsps / HL / more when i get round to writing more
plugins
-- Complex plugin systems allow game to use any combination of
audio, video, etc (dll renderer)
-- Complex "game abstraction layer"
-- Conical, spherical, cylindrical, box and point clip volumes
-- Scripted entities with compiled code
-- EXTREMELY ADVANCED physics engine *still in progress*
Simulates:
- cloth (done)
- liquids
- gases
- deformable solids (done)
- wind , gravity - constant /variable / scripted /
interpolated forces and accelerations (done)
-- Multithreaded kernel
-- Open SOurce
And what''s more its
++ FREE!!!!
it''s called "g-shell" - look out for it in 2-4 months time.
But keep it up, guy who wrote the engine!

You sir are an idiot. If he had all these features, he could just call his engine Doom4, and license it for $800k. "
Well I didnt say that did I? I am not an idiot. I listed very generic functionality for a game engine, please dont get hasty.
beaton_john, I would pay $20 for that engine. EXACTLY my point.

you need a whole lot more than that bud. Wheres your level editors? 3ds straight into the engine provides very limited functionality IMHO. Wheres your physics? Collision you say, does that include support for physics collision, projectiles, complicated models etc etc.
etc.

Jeez, people, he wants $20 for it. From the screenshots, the engine doesn''t look exceptional, but not that bad either. Making a screenshot look pretty is more a question about art than about the engine anyway. If it is stable, easy to use, and works well, then it is very well worth $20. Especially, if it comes with good service.
Hypothetical situation:
A) game developer (note the *game*, not *engine* developer !) makes an engine hiumself, notices tons of bugs, take smore time to work on those than on the actual game itself, wants to make it always better and better, gets lost in details -> game never ships.
B) game developer uses open source engine. Notices missing/buggy features, asks developer to implement/correct them, gets a reply: it''s open source, do it yourself (jump to situation A). Or better: developer tries to use obscure engine feature number 26. Finds no or incomplete docs. Asks one of the x million developers working on the project. Get back a RTFM. Notices that there is no fucking manual. Jump to situation A.
C) game developer buys $20 engine. Uses it. Finds bugs and missing features. Contacts author telling him "hey, I paid for the engine, I need those bugs fixed" - engine developer fixes it. Problem solved. Game developer doesn''t understand a feature of the engine - developer sends him docu or explains everything by email. Problem solved.
What situation seems most enjoyable and productive to you ? Guess. Sometimes (and in the actual industry: always), service and direct developer contact is much more important than top notch feature set. Open source often provides features, but rarely good service and documentation. I''d be more than willing to pay $20 for that.
LOL
So if my engine has collision detection in it... I can call it Doom 4 and make hundreds of dollars from it?
Sweet!

Tried your engine (1k/sec download)
Seems to work quite well 60-230 fps on a Ti4200
Still wouldnt buy it even though i am no where near starting to writing an engine myself.
As some said now write a really good level editor and sell that as a package and I'm sure your get some takers.
Had some ATI errors popup when started (bit of a bug??)

didn''t try it but the screen shots looked pretty good. I wouldn''t pay for it, because i have made my own basecode and some parts of the engine, and heck i give them away for free.

I tried the engine and the max FPS i could get was about 15FPS on my GF2. plus I got a bunch of errors about ATI extensions that couldn''t be loaded. You really should do a check to see what kind of card the user has (check for a simple ATI or NV extension) and then load the extensions for that path.

Leave the guy alone you bashers. It''s a fair offer, it''s not like he''s giving it for 100k or something. I worked on engines that most of you couldn''t pay enough even to take a peek at (judging that you can''t pay 20 bucks, not that I''m saying you have to), but I still say making those features he has is not a stroll in the park, so stop giving bad remarks and say something useful.
For those who say that something like that can be implemented using free info on the internet. Of course it can, but so can an atomic bomb since there''s vast info how to make one.
SlavaKrot: I recommend you add some dx9 hardware features so you can shut these guys mouths
