Argh! SDK Problems ...

Original Post
I recently bought "Programming role playing games using direct x", and it includes the DX 8.0 SDK. When it is properly installed, the sdk files scease to exist; the computer is currently running DX8.1. If I install DX 9 sdk''s will I have any problem getting through this book? Do the DX 9 sdk''s have any reference to previous versions or just ver 9?
I''m only on the 6th chapter so forgive my puzzledness.

Yes, all versions of DirectX are backwards compatable. Otherwise, games made with previous versons would not work anymore.
quote:I''ll keep that in mind, thanks. Also, if I''m using the DX9 SDK and I''m working with DX8, where exactly can I find reference to DX8 procedures and functions?

Quick note, If you install the DX 9 SDK make sure you uninstall any previous version''s of Direct X or you''ll have troubles. They are NOT meant to co-exist on the same system.
Cheers
Chris

There is an extras download that has the documentation for a few older releases in it and DX8 is one of them.

Where would I beable to find that?
It''s where the other SDK downloads are on MSDN.

Everything is referenced by number.
LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE7 means its a long pointer to a direct draw surface, version 7 of the SDK.
LPDIRECTDRAWSURFACE3 would mean its a direct draw surface, version 3 of the SDK.
Etc.. etc..
That''s not accurate. In DirectDraw7 you use DDSURFACEDESC2. However you''re fairly safe in DX8+ since they realized that their old method of numbering interfaces was confusing the heck out of everyone (they only incremented the numbers what that objects/interface changed, so a lot of helper structs were quite a few numbers behind).
