Coding Music?

I’ve got a dilemma I’m sure some of you can appreciate – I’ve got a particularly difficult coding assignment to complete this weekend, and I need to block out the noise and distraction of dorm life to get it done Best way I’ve found to do that is to throw on the headphones and crank up the music – only problem is, the type of music I usually listen to has a tendency to make it hard to focus. If you asked me not-too-long ago, I would’ve said I hated anything that sounded remotely like techno. But recent experience suggests that its probably my best bet – no lyrics to distract, nice steady beat to energize, that sort of thing. Only problem is, I don’t have any techno, and I don’t know what to get . So – can anyone make some suggestions for good coding music, or maybe just list their own favorites? Keep in mind that I''m clueless when it comes to the seemingly infinite flavors and varieties of the stuff -Lutrosis

Tried classical. This sounds stupid, but I like it too much I end up focusing on the music and not the coding.

I''ve got this idea in my head that techno would work well because a guy on the wing was in the room the other day and we were messing with a little pII box I got from an IS dept. auction (pII 233, 32m ram, 2gig harddrive, generic network card, fully functional. Can''t get much better for $10), and he put some techno on. I don''t really like it, but I can''t deny that it focused me a bit. I think the not liking it part actually helps a bit, go figure.

Uuuuh... I thought this thread would be about procedurally creating music, as in creating sample-based tracks on described sample data. Pleh...

Anyway, try ambientish techno and use earphones - works like a charm - you won''t hear a thing and all of your thoughts are gathered all the time.

Sorry about the confusion <=[ Ambient techno, eh? That's a step in the right direction, I'll check it out. Any specific suggestions?

**EDIT**

Jackpot! (I think)

Straight from an Amazon.com customor review of Incunabula :
"This album is absolutely incredible for concentration during the finer details of a software engineering project at work, or during any of a multitude of other situations in which you may need mental focus."

Sounds like what I'm looking for

No no no no NO! No CD''s!!! Do not taint your peace of mind with custom-selected music - it''ll never work! This is precisely what internet radio is for - ad-free non-stop music. Style-pure and doesn''t require anything other than a sound card and a speaker set/headphones. If techno suits you well, Digitally Imported is your friend. All you need is broadband (and some player that can play back streamable media, such as WinAmp).

Whenever I finally get into the zone, I usually throw on my Cowboy Bebop CD. Works like a charm.

SomaFM.

Check out Groove Salad or even Drone Zone if you really need to focus. Beat Blender has some really good tunes, too.

DJ Shadow, Massive Attack, Prodigy and the Chemical Brothers. Oh, and Rob Dougan, if you can find any - at the very least 'Clubbed to Death.'

A sample of my own collection

There was also a CD I had at one time called "Breaks and Beats for Supercharged Freaks," which got played a lot while I was coding Alien Territory. I don't remember much about what was on there, except that there was a song called 'Bassline Kickin' but the lyric actually sounded like 'rape my chicken.'

Congrat''s on becoming a mod, Mr. pig - haven''t had the chance to suck up to you yet ! PS. for the record - Prodigy sucks.

Thankee, thankee, mister Crispy.

Wait, didn''t you just say you were going to suck up to me?

Because if you wanted to do that, trying to claim that Prodigy - and I quote - "sucks" - is not the right way to do it. C''mon, man! Firestarter? Mindfields? Narayan? I mean, heck, they were basically the people who paved the way for the Big Beat genre - and it''s most notable artist, Fatboy Slim.

So... *taps fingertips together* I am thinkink in fact that it is you who "sucks," my friend.

OT: WOOT congrats on the moderatorship Pig!!! might i point out that i was the first to vote for you?(yeah, official suck up, though im not sure what i could ever stand to gain. )

and the best part is, you''ve earned it, i brought up your name because of all the help you''ve given me on IRC #gamedev. and im sure the others that voted for you have been helped by your contributions to the community. Go You!!!
i mean it, thanks for your help, my engine wouldn''t be the same without ya.

On-Topic: sorry for cluttering your thread. i thought this would be about procedurally generated music also. i wanted to discuss a particle engine that was driven by Direct Sound Buffer info, kind of like the "ambient screen" in WMP.

but on the topic of coding music, i like soothing, soulful stuff.

Natalie Merchant(any)
Fiona Apple(any)
Fugee''s(any)

im in to other types of music of course, but there''s something about Natalie or Fiona or Lauren that just gets the juices flowing(non-literally of course)

The Art of Noise almost always makes it into the coding playlist. The rest varies by mood.

usually I have a mixture of Iced Earth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, and a few other bands. Although it depends on where in the programming cycle I am as to what music is more effective for focus.
