How can i do this? I alreay have Windows XP istalled on the whole hard drive, that is all one partition. Would i have to like separate the partition to install linux onto? Is having these 2 OS''s on the same computer possible, If so how? Thanks for help. ______________________________________________________________ "It takes all kinds." -Adam Carolla

Yes. Partition. Install Windows. Install Linux. (Do not install windows last...)

To elaborate: yes, you'd need another partition from which to run Linux (well, two, actually). I believe there are products like Partition Magic that can do this for you.

Why do you want to use Linux?

Good question.

Most distributions'' install disks have tools on them that can resize your Windows partition without destroying any of your data. So you can shrink your windows partition, make two more for linux (it can run with only one, but it isn''t advisable), and then install onto those.

Then how is it so cool? It's "better" than Windows yet, unlike Windows, you can't do everything you want in it.

Intriguing.

In my experence having Linix and Windows on the same machine is bad, I have run into a lot of problems having a duel boot system for some reason.

My suggestion is to buy a cheep computer and install Linix onto that, with you not knowing how to do partisions - I think it would be best.

Oh and Linix is not the coolest OS ever - Try a real mans OS - SOLARIS!

Ah . . . I suggest choosing anouther profession if you don''t like to read. Dealing with computers (programming, or just IT work) takes a LOT of reading. . .

I don''t think Linux is stupid. I think that thinking its the greatest OS ever is, especially when you have that idea without any real experience with it.

It reminds me of the attitude of little white thugs who think that the gangster life is great as they go to sleep in their middle class suburban homes. I''m not sure why that is, though.

Linux carries with it a load of necessary reading.

As sbennett said, it should come with an application for this. Read the documentation (and get used to frequenting it). Do you want to scrub windows altogether or just resize?

Windows XP is a multi-billion dollar OS written by professional computer software engineers.

Linux *.* is a free hackjob OS created by a bunch of fat smelly hackers.

So, saying Linux is cool means that you are saying that fat smelly people who NEVER shower are cool.

Pffft. Linux is a joke of an OS. I installed Fedora Core 1 over the weekend. Lets see, my mouse locked up 3 times on the installer, no SPDIF by default, programs were slow to load. I laughed the whole time while installing it, thinking to myself what the hell do these Linux zealots see in it that makes it so worthy of defending and starting wars. The only thing I did find neat was I could install themes on gnome2 and new splash screens and icons.

The great thing about linux is that it seems to be an OS written by programmers for programmers. The amount of free (as in beer) software for it is great too. To get a range of windows software comparable to the amount my redhat installation came with would cost a few thousand pounds.

Checkout MandrakeMove
A Mandrake version runnable from CD. Supposedly boots Linux from CD with no change to OS. Might be a good way to let you play around with it:
Details

I''ve had no problems with a dual-boot Win2K and Mandrake Linux. I converted my harddrive to FAT-32 then used Partition Magic (though Mandrake install can do it) to split up my drive. There are more threads in the Everything Unix forum on this topic.

The thing to keep in mind when learning Linux without someone with experience on hand to help is that you''re going to feel stupid and that Linux can''t do anything. It''s a shitty feeling. It stems from the fact that Linux is really really different. There is no more C: drive, no more point-and-click configuration of hardware, and no more people you can call for help.

Think of it this way. You didn''t learn and become comfortable with Windows instantly. It took time. Going from fumbling with how to double click to interacting with your computer like it was instinct took years most likely. It''s going to be the same with Linux but HARDER. It''ll reward you in the end though. Someone proficient in Linux can probably work much much faster than a Windows user in most common tasks. Also, while Linux can''t do a few things that Windows can do, Windows can''t do a lot more important things that Linux can.

There are tons of tutorials out there so I''m just gonna throw out some small hints on getting started:

Download and use Knoppix first. Knoppix does not install anything to the hard disk so it''s completely risk free for experimentation. It boots completely off the CD-ROM. Note, you''ll lose your settings on every reboot but the idea is to give you a general feel for Linux. Also, it makes a handy "rescue disk" in case you muck up your system. Test all your hardware so you know what might not work (sound, network, USB, graphics card)

When in need of help, people will be more friendly towards people who try to solve it themselves first. Try a few Google searches. Google has a built in Linux search feature. Eventually you''ll need to go ask in a Linux forum or IRC channel. Some people are openly hostile towards people who have no motivation to help themselves.

Try RedHat or Mandrake first as they do most of the setup for you. After a year, switch to Debian or Gentoo for advanced package management and overall, "more hardcore" users.

You can mount (make Linux recognize) your old Windows files using vfat and the "mount" command.

WINE can run Windows programs but does so poorly and inconsistently.

Linux can not write to NTFS (native XP) drives. Any kind of write support you might see talked about on the Internet is 100% guaranteed to screw things up.
