Original Post
Since the last graphics card thread got hijacked by yours truly, and I'd like to continue the discussion in it, I am starting this thread for nVidia owners.
Please note that this initial post will be updated somewhat frequently with links to nVidia resources and/or additional rules.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Things that I personally will not tolerate in this thread.
-Architecture Flames. I don't mind if you have a serious beef with nVidia because your Radeon has x.yz better FPS in such and such benchmark, but please at least be informative and technical as to your debate. I'd like to hope that at least somebody in the thread can post a decent counterpoint.
-Hijacking. This is about nVidia cards, questions about nVidia cards, and hell, I'll even allow nForce discussion. But no monkies, cookies, .cx websites, etc. On topic, people.
So please, discuss your nVidia cards, products, and create a community knowledge base.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Linkage:
nVidia Homepage
Pricewatch listing of current video card prices
RivaTuner - One of the better nVidia tweakers around.
nvHardPage - My personal preference when it comes to nVidia tweakers.
----------------------------------------------------------------
On that note, I'd like to know if anyone can tell me exactly what the difference between the 5900 and the 5900Ultra is, other than the extra PCI-fan. Actual Architecture differences or is it purely clockspeeds?

isnt it always clockspeed?... could have something todo with the used ram, ive seen the 5900 with various types/ammount, but ive never seen a 59000ultra with 128mb...
i think this thread is a good place to ask a question i had in mind (and noone will hijack it under the observing eye of a mod
when will the next generation of nvidia gfx cards hit the market and will they have 2 gpu''s? how much faster will it be (compared to a geforce4/fx) and how much will it probably cost (1k$)?

I''m the proud owner of an ATI Radeon 9700, and I love it. From what i''ve seen from my friends who have nVidia cards, they perform about equally in most games/apps. Most papers that say nVidia is better or that ATI is better are using numbers, and we as computer programmers should know that higher clocks doesn''t always mean better card (5800
)
But seriously, I think it is absolutely great that we have both ATI and nVidia, because it keeps them coming out with great cards.
End of discussion.

My first graphics setup was 2d Matrox Mystique and 3d Diamond Voodoo card.
This lasted me till 2001 when I got a 2nd hand Riva TNT2. I needed it for I started playing CS at LAN parties and needed something more powerful but didn''t really have a lot of money. It cost me about £40. Well anyways the card was ok and I was using the Detonator drivers.
Half a year ago a friend who has like 10 pcs said I could borrow his GeForce 2 MX till I got a new graphics card.
So at the moment I''m on a GF2 MX. It''s a joke, but then again I don''t play many games on my PC (I would if I could) but yea, I''m happy enough at the moment. I need a new card soon but am not sure whether to go for GeForce or Radeon.

T2k:
I did a little research before purchasing my 5900 to make sure that the next generation wasn''t coming out in 2 months and found nothing. And that hasn''t changed AFAIK. The FX2''s(I just made this name up), haven''t even been announced, and so it''s hard to theorize exactly what architecture changes will be present in them.
I''d like to assume the following:
-Even faster Memory speeds, upwards of 1200-1500 range.
-Core speeds of 600-700
If we are to follow past trends, we''ll see nVidia release a triple-set of next-gen cards. A low-end, a mid-range, and a bleeding-edge.
Low End: Will include new architecture(Shader Versioning, DX10?), and cost around $200 at launch, but speed-wise fall short in existing DX9 apps as compared to the 5900+''s.
Mid Range: New Architecture, and will be a 5-10% performance boost over the 5900''s for around $300-$400.
Bleeding Edge: We will all want these cards. Mostly likely a 25-45% performance boost over current generation cards. But they will retail around $500-$600 at launch.
As far as multiple GPU''s, I haven''t heard this idea discussed previously. But I will theorize the following, albeit with a disclaimer that I know very little about the actual architecture of graphics cards:
Right now Graphics cards are called on mostly to perform the high-end Lighting, Shading, and Texturing routines. All on a current single GPU. If we were to actually use SMP GPU''s, I would imagine each GPU would be given independant control over one of those tasks. Mostly I''d imagine there would be a GPU for Lighting and a GPU for Texturing. The price range of such a card would likely be far out of the reach of the average gamer though, as are most SMP workstations currently.
Grizwald: No, this discussion will continue, thanks for your informative input.

Several somewhat nVidia-related questions:
1.Something appears to overheat occasionally in my computer and I don''t know what it is. Some fan (I don''t know which) starts going more quickly and the monitor stops getting a signal and I have to turn off my computer. It''s either my GeForce 5X 5900 (don''t know if it''s ultra or not. I''m guessing it''s not, but I can overclock it if it ever gets outdated, which leads to my next question), my motherboard (with an nForce platform) or my (entirely non-nvidia related) processor. How would I determine which it is?
2.How would I go about overclocking an nVidia card?
3.What exactly is the difference between the 5950 and the 5900 Ultra?

I sold my nVidia card on eBay not so long ago. It was a GeForce MX 400. I sold it and got a Radeon 9200 SE to replace it.

If you can wait another 6 months or so for the next-gen cards, then do so. If you have the money, go right now to an FX5900. If you don''t, then find yourself a GF3-generation card to play around with for cheap.

1.)
-Get a utility such as Motherboard Monitor and pay attention to the temperatures of these components.
-the "Ultra'' cards of any FX series simply denotes that it
a)comes with a built-on fan that takes up a PCI slot and
b)usually ships with a higher clockspeed because of this.
-The FX series switch from "Standard(2D)" mode to "Performance(3D)" mode intelligently when they are required to do so, if your fan suddenly kicks into high gear while gaming, this is probably just the card reacting to the need for extra cooling and speed.
2.)Download a utility such as RivaTuner or nvHardPage which will easily allow you to tweak almost everything about your card.

Yeah, I won''t have money for at least a month. And I''m going off to University in September so I want to upgrade before then. So I''ll upgrade as late as possible, so I can wait for the next gen cards

Hopefully the next-generation cards will quiet this entire ATI vs. nVidia thing and put them on relatively even speed footing again. If nothing else, an upgrade to an nVidia card will allow you to simply pull the GF2MX out and put the new card in without any driver troubles whatsoever.

I was just kidding about the end of discussion thingy shadows
But I can''t wait to see what happens to those new entries into the GFX-card market (sabre i believe?) We need some more competetion!
You chose a few replies too soon for your witticism. It seemed more like sassing a new topic than humor.
Also, right now I have to go with Gainward as the reliable manufacturer, they have nVidia''s vote(Golden Sample award) and until the next gen''s come out, I think the others have a lot of catching up to do.

This is just I guess a classification question but are the nVidia Quadros a business CAD/modeling card thing or can they necessarly be a high-end gamming card? My school has a "PNY Quadro FX3000 256MB DDR 8X AGP" card and it has nVidia on it but the only thing they do with it is scale modeling.
My technology teacher said I could borrow it for a weekend if I wanted to but since the price tag seems to be >1.5K USD, I don''t think so. Well... it would beat my "PNY MX440se PCI" card but that card suits me fine.

Since the pricetag is out of my range, and most gamers in general, I''ve never read or heard anything about using the high-end workstation cards as a gaming card. I''ll dig up some technical specs later if I can find them on nvidia.com to compare numbers.

I have a problem on my stationary computer. the graphics are showing all weird on the, it is blurry and every line has the average darkness of the amount of black in the pixels in the line.
it appeared all off a sudden when the screen started blinking and stuff while i was typing something, and i promply shut down the computer. i checked all the hardware and connections, and when i restarted i checked for virii, malware and driver problems, but the graphics problems would not go away from there on. i tried connecting another screen to the computer, but the problems remained. i am quite sure that it is not a software problem, and it is not the monitor, so i suspect that it has to do with my video card, a Nvidia GeForce 256 Annihilator. i havent got any spare card to try, so i''m not 100 percent sure. anyone that has heard of anything like this happening with their nvidias?
i might take a photo of what the graphics look like, but my camera is currently unavailable. the computer is only usuable for playing music atm.
i''d hate having to replace the card, it has served me very well.

A fairly common problem, and it''s a monitor problem. Happened to my cousin who also had a GeForce 256, but other cases I''ve seen I don''t know of the video card. You''ll probably need to replace your monitor.
