I''m going to become a serial killer and hunt down ''tards like you!

On my spare time I''ll be working on the modeling/artwork/design for various videogames and films AND be touring the world as a rockstar.

I''m going to be kept in a fattening pen (i.e. cubicle) where I will be mercilessly beaten by a cruel master (i.e. boss) for not coding fast enough.

I was planning on being a programmer of some sort, but it seems as though it's a job that's becoming increasingly popular and one that's going to be pretty saturated soon (everyone at my school wants to be a programmer for some reason). That, along with the fact that I enjoy writing much more, has led me to decide that I want to get a degree in English and become some type of writer. Were I to be forced to make the decision at this moment, I would probably be a journalist--not a gaming journalist, though.

Edit: By the way, don't misconstrue that as me saying I no longer want to program. It's just something that I'd rather pursue as a hobby.

Don''t worry, I''ll find a way to tie programming into it somehow.

Here''s what I''d like to do: become an artist who makes enough money to live comfortably and has time to follow other interests.

Then I could do real work. Like building a house and working on cars. I''d like to volunteer to help firefighters, cops, or home building groups.

I''d love to be a game developer. Well, I guess I technically am; just not professionally ...

If I said I knew what I am going to do with my life, I would be lying. I will probably end up being that insane person that sits around in developer meetings ranting about stuff nobody can fully comprehend.

I want to be a programmer somewhere in the world, preferably somewhere warm.

Or I want to hit the game winning home run in the world series and break the bat while doing so. I played a season of baseball once when I was like 11, I think I can do it.

BTW, Dungeon Master, that sig is really cool for some reason.

First I want to go into games development professionally (Programming). I know everyone (when i say that, i mean quite a few people ) wants to go into games dev. However i know that i can make it into the profession.
After that i hope to get into computer security since that is my second love.

Lets not forget that many people want to be programmers but theres a difference between those people and people who have been programming from a young age (9 for me, for instance) like many of us. At my school there are loads of people who want to program and become game devs but they can''t be bothered to learn to program or won''t put in the time. Someone near me wanted to apply for games programming but could not understand why he couldn''t make it. It was probably since he only knew HTML...
So don''t give up mscgamer

I''ve been telling people that I want to do movie special effects (that''s why I''m studying CG), but really I just want to be a secret agent for the NSA. Or an astronaut on my way to Mars. Either one, totally awesome. And since I''m a totally awesome guy, it would fit.

But seriously, some considerations:

I''ve been considering Grad School, but the problem is I''m upto my eyeballs in debt, and will be even worse (4 times worse) if I don''t work in my home state after I graduate from undergrad work.

I''ve been considering joining the Air Force and making THEM pay for Grad School. After getting out of there, maybe make a shot at NASA.

I''ve also considered the NSA or the CIA, with the same hope that they could pay for Grad School. I''m the perfect candidate, no law trouble, no family with law trouble, half of my family has already recieved security clearances (including both my parents), and so on.

I''ve been offered a job at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, but I really don''t care to do that. I interned there over last summer, and got enough of a taste to know that it''s not what I want to do. If all else fails, it''s a paycheck, plus I might be able to parlet it into something better. I''m hoping to use the people that I know there as referrals for anytime I apply to any department of the government.

I''ve been offered a job working at an elite prep-school that is a mere 7 miles from my house (meaning a nice commute). I interned there during the fall semester, and my boss was apparently very impressed with me. I setup their campus wide wireless network (this place is on the scale of a small, expensive college). Generally, they try to make any new employees that have degrees into teachers also, so I might end up teaching some kind of comp sci courses there. Also, they have a martial arts club on campus, and usually like facutly members to run clubs, so that would be another reason to stick around. However, I never really thought of myself as a teacher. I teach martial arts, that''s fine, because I can hit my students when they don''t get the lesson right, and they have to listen to me and not talk back or I get to hit them, and if they talk in class I can hit them, and generally I get to hit them, but teaching comp sci wouldn''t allow me to do that with the freedom that I can when teaching martial arts.

This summer I''m going to end up working as a camp councelor for this summer camp held at this prep school. I''ll supposedly be taking pictures of the kids and putting them up on the website so that parents can see what is going on. Then, at the end, I make a promotional DVD to send to prospective customers for next years summer camp. Might be fun.

I hope to also pick up my web design business again. I used to run an out-of-house shop, but closed shop after 3 customers when my first semester started.

But basically I''m just procrastinating so that I don''t have to fill out any forms that I should be filling out right now until the last minute. Woo! Let''s hear it for apathy!

to all the people that want to get jobs as programmers:

Don''t worry. Study hard. You will be very hard to turn down if you graduate with honors.

The government is always hiring, whether as a civilian or as military, so is academia (though generally I would consider a faculty position as "the end of the road," going by the rule of "those that CAN''T, TEACH"). Use it as your "experience" stage. Once you have experience, private sector companies will be a lot more willing.

If you are good enough, knowledgeable enough, someone will hire you. You probably won''t get a job with a Bachelors in Comp Sci with a C+ or B- average, but a Masters degree (including all the extra skills that come with it) and/or excellent grades go a LONG way.

Finally, get to know people along the way, i.e. don''t be a comp-sci-nerd-hermit. If you have to skip going to the movies to schmooze with your cooworkers at a company you are interning with, movie tickets are too expensive anyways, and your friends aren''t going to give you health insurance or a 401(k) (retirement plan).

Ambition, dedication, single-mindedness, no distractions (like babies, so lay of the ho''s [and I don''t mean whores, but a social disease would also be bad]), there will be plenty of time later when noone cares about popularity contests anymore. "I''m good enough, I''m smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me!" If you can say that (honestly, not like Stewart Smalley), then you shouldn''t worry, the people that like you will be knocking down your door because they know you are good and you''re good because you''re smart.

MOST of the people that I know that are currently in comp sci don''t have the head for it. They won''t get jobs. MOST of the people that I know that complain about not being able to get a job are the same ones that didn''t have heads for comp sci in school, but somehow still managed to pull through. Code gurus get jobs, become a code guru. Find the tao, and the tao will find you.

Finally, if you get stuck, ASK FOR FUCKING HELP!!! I know SO many people that could have passed various comp sci courses with respectable grades if they had only asked for help from a tutor. There is bound to be atleast one code guru in your class, and he or she will probably hate being asked for help, but screw him/her. You need help. Hehe, just kidding, usually there are professional tutors available through the university FREE OF CHARGE. Utilize ALL your resources, you''re a dumbass if you have not and fail.

I''ve been aiming at doing the game programmer thing, like everyone else. Recently, though, I''ve found a new interest, and if it grows enough in the next couple years, I''ll seriously consider taking it to the next level (career.) This is, of course, the Japanese language. I''m only just getting started with it (second half of first semester), but I really enjoy it so far. I also seem to be doing pretty well. I''m probably one of the few people that made it through the first semester without help from the tutor, and I earned an A. That''s got to mean something, right?
