Ok, who wants to tell me whats wrong with my PC? Whenever i goto shutdown, it restarts instead, then runs chkdisk on drive C. chkdisk doesn''t find any errors, but when i get into windows some things are different. The things seem to be pretty much random. One time i lost my mozilla bookmarks, one time i lost my mapped network drives, and one time i lost my MSN display picture and background settings. I''ve taken the PC to a computer repair place and they said (after 6 days of having the PC) the drive was faulty. It was an old drive anyway, so i bought a new one. And i''m still having these problems with the 1 week old drive. I could take the PC back and i don''t think it''d cost me anything (they already charged me for ''fixing'' the problem), but it''ll take 4 or 5 days for them to look at it, so i''d prefer to fix it myself if i can. Things i have installed (in approximate order of installation):
  • Everything off of windows update
  • Winamp
  • Winzip
  • WinRar
  • MSN and Messenger Plus
  • Nero 6
  • PowerDVD
  • Office 97 (Word & Powerpoint)
  • Norton Antivirus
  • MSVC 6.0
  • Kazaa I think its probably a software problem, because i didn''t get it immediately, and if it was hardware then the PC would shutdown properly at least. I''m not sure when exactly it started behaving strangely, but it was sometime just after i installed the windows update stuff. I''ve reinstalled windows 3 times on the old drive, and the problem kept comming back, but i''m not sure exactly when it comes back. I could reinstall windows again, and note when exactly it starts being weird, but its a pain to do and takes pretty much a whole day to do. So, does anyone know whats wrong? Any ideas would be helpful. Cheers, Steve

Are you on a cable modem? If so, you may have installed something that altered how your computer shuts down. In your power down options, there should be an option that says something like "do not shut down while connected to the internet" or something of that nature.

    Switch it to off.

Have you tried scanning for spyware with something like Adaware?

Yep, i''ve run Ad-Aware, and it didn''t find anything (Apart from the tracking cookies that it always finds).

I have a cable modem, but its plugged into my server, which is networked to my PC.

Today i lost my network drives agaian.

Something that may be of relevence: Before i got the new drive, chkdisk ran on several drives. Now its only running on my C drive - which happens to be the only FAT32 partition...

    Thanks for the replies.

Yep I already use linux on my server, and i''d prefer to stick to Windows 2000 on my main machine if possible...

    It''s probably a hardware problem.

    Right click on My Computer
Click properties and the advanced tab
Under start up and recovery click settings
Under System Failure uncheck automatically restart

Complete these steps and see if it still happens.

    Nope, that didn''t change anything.

Ah, it did - i now get a kernel error when it shuts down, with a wee stack dump and stuff. I''ll write down what it says next time...

Ok, this isn''t going to mean much to anyone, but i''ll show it anyway. This is what i get when it shutsdown:

    *** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005,0x804F703C,0x00000000,0x00000004)
    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

    *** Address 804F703C base of 80400000, DateStamp 3ee6c002 - ntoskrnl.exe

    Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or
    technical support group.

That looks like an access violation (0xC0000005) in the kernel. So, does that mean its a software fault? Should i report it? If so, how?

    Cheers,
