Hai all, I am working on scene managment and character animation but i m getting problems with the frame rate. I case of scene managment i m using Octrees to draw a level from one file( of size 7000 polygons). Here i lost my frame rate almost it becomes to 0.00 to 0.01 fps. i don''t know why? In case of character animation frame rate is suffucient but it still varies enough( from 29.0 to 44.0 fps). I m using key frame animation. Plz tell me how can i solve these problems and can get a constant frame rate. Thanks

What are the specs on your machine (processor, RAM, video card/memory, etc)? A 7000-poly level may bring your machine to its knees.

Sounds like a profiler would be a great tool here. MSVC++6 has a built-in profiler. Go to the Build menu, at the bottom. I haven''t used it yet, but it might be able to do the job (assuming you have MSVC++6). I believe AMD released a free profiler. There might be others.

If you can''t get a 3rd-party profiler, then just insert some statements before and after sections of your code that record the time to a file or something, and then look through and try to find areas that both execute a lot compared to other sections, and take a long time to execute. Those areas will be what you need to optimize.

From your description, I can''t say much more. It just seems that something in your octree algorithm is horribly inefficient. Very likely it''s only one small section of code that gets executed a lot, and takes longer than it really should each of those executions.
