As one person noted at Blues News, he is one of the few, if only, professional game programmers that actually get out there and communicates with the crowds. All the other devevelopers just say "When its done" and that is it.

Derek Smart actually used to post here under the handle of dsmart . Last time I checked you could see his work at www.3000ad.com (which he would mention in every other post, even though it was in his sig). I know the post count on his account seems low, but I could have sworn that he had more than that. Or it could just be that there were just fewer posts and members back then that he stood out more. Ah memories!

Yep, Derek Smart is an asshole. But he makes me laugh, so it''s all good.

-DS announces super-mega-ultra game that's going to ******* re-write every gaming history book by bending the threads of time around his gigantic head that contains the messianic mind of gaming.
-DS game released, sucks horribly.
-DS blames everyone everything anything involved for the fault, begins to patch to a stable point while insisting to EVERYONE that he's a demigod of game development and anyone who disagrees can go **** themselves.
-DS game patched a long while later, after bombing in stores, to a stable point.
-DS announces next game, promising the best experience you've ever had, wonderful features, state-of-the-art everything.

Somewhere in the middle of the "Derek Smart Saga", he made a brief appearance on the Genesis 3D forums... started 3 flame wars and had his IP range banned. I would link to it, but the board''sserver suffered a major HD problem and all those early posts (Nov. 97 to about April 98 or 99 I believe) were lost. His posts were so irrational... they read like a 12 year old''s.
When I read a Wired article talking about his flame wars, a month later, I laughed myself out of my chair (didn''t know it had gotten ingrained in the popular net culture of the time).
Then they had a segment bashing him on what is now TechTV (then ZDTV). My parents couldn''t understand why I almost spit my food out laughing at dinner.
That guy is nothing but a joke. Kinda like that freakoid Andre LaMothe.

I hate his arrogance, and the bc series are bohooring. The graphics looks like crap on shit and the interface is the worst since windooze 3.1. Though it´s a cool idea.
The fact is, he makes Daikatana-era John Romero seem humble. At least Romero was smart enough to shut up after Daikatana bombed, unlike Smart. BC3000AD was in development for what, 7 years? Take Two finally just shipped to cut their losses because they''d blown so much money on the game.
Although, DNF is almost at eight years now...I should hope we''ll see it this year.
