Why not have some form of community art
I wonder how hard it would be to just make a standard Gamedev.net Forums art package. That way we could cut down on the number of "We need artists d00dz" posts that are on the forums.
Like make a few standard character models, skins etc. and then we can just let anyone who wants a "medeival rpg" etc download that rather than keep posting that they need artists.
Good idea, bad idea?

I think that could be a good idea. But I think we should do more then just have archives of models and skins. We need more tutorials on art for games. If we offer learning, then people can learn to make their own stuff.

But of course, people would have to WANT to learn for it to work... some people are just lazy.

I personally would LOVE to see some tutorials on making art for games!!
Some stock art would be nice too, especially when you are working on the game engine and not focusing on the final art. In the end, I myself want to be able to create my own final game art.

So combine the ideas - someone who knows how, make a standard model, one skin for it, and instructions on how to modify the model and make variant skins, and then some of the other artists in the forum can follow the directions and make a boquet of skins that you can give out in the art package. I myself would love to try making a skin if I had a nice model to put it on, but I don't know how.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
Do you think we should have a survey about what should go into such a graphics package? If so, should the survey be in the art forum or the lounge? What questions should be asked?

I haven''t been there in a while, but I think garagegames has a feature where people donate their unused art and music so others can use them.

I think the biggest hurdle to something like this would be licensing. Creating some kind of standard license that every contributor agrees to is going be sticky.
