I was wondering if there is a C++ library that, in Windows programming, set up the window, window class, etc. for you? For me, the guts of Windows programming are a pain in the butt.

If you''re making games, try SDL or some other libraries. For "normal" applications you could try for example wxWindows. It''s much easier than W32 API and is also cross-platform.

For complicated GUI applications with menus, toolbars, check boxes, edit controls, tabs, etc (not just games that need one window) - you can''t go past the VCL or CLK which come with Borland Delphi and Borland C++.

Isn''t this the whole point of MFC and the other thing, is it the WTL? These wrap everything up in objects too.

Or visual studio will create the skeleton of a windows app with window, message loop etc when you create a new project if you ask it to.

I prefer to write my own windowing classes as i need them. That way i learn how to use them, i know how they work, they don''t have any bloat, and its more satisfying

Use wxWindows. Then if you decide to port your application to another platform, most of the work is done for you. Their distribution has OpenGL samples you can use as a template to get started (if you''re using OpenGL, that is).

IMO here there is no great library.

VCL is Borland specific (but you can put the VS.NET compiler in). VCL''s use of properties shows how useful they really are. wx is linked in, I don''t have much experience with it, others like it. MFC is...MFC. You can do better. WTL is what I use, it is kinda MFC-ish but no link requirement. Not a ton of documentation on WTL, however. VXCL is another free alternative that you can check out.

I''ve found that Acronym Finder is invaluable when reading technical stuff that is new to me.

I''ll try ''em. I found an article on WTL right here on GameDev.net so I''ll try that first.

I havent tried it, but there is a cross platform GUI called GTK.

GTK was used for the GIMP and it can definitely get the job done. They even have a form designer called Gator. As for how clean the code is, im not sure, but i intend to try it for level editors in the future instead of Windows only C#.

However, if you only need windows GUI, C#/VB.NET is the best there is.

Theres a C#/.NET binding for GTK called GTK#.
