I know there is google, but i though it would be more useful to narrow down the list a bit that i would get from google here.

If I could''t use MSVC, I''d use Dev-C++.

On my desktop, MSVC++ for projects, Borland Command-Line Compiler 5.5 for one-file programs, SciTE for everything from C to HTML to PHP, and Notepad and MSWord 2000 for everything else.

On my laptop, Borland Command-Line Compiler 5.5 and SciTE.

SciTE: Scintilla Text Editor. Best general text editor there is out there... comes with a powerful programmer-oriented feature set, and behaves exactly the same in both Windows and Linux. Wonderful, wonderful thing.
RIP GameDev.net: launched 2 unusably-broken forum engines in as many years, and now has ceased operating as a forum at all, happy to remain naught but an advertising platform with an attached social media presense, headed by a staff who by their own admission have no idea what their userbase wants or expects.Here's to the good times; shame they exist in the past.

GCC (g++); I don''t use an IDE (I prefer a combination of Kate and command line compilation to Anjuta, and I keep forgetting to investigate KDevelop; Eclipse is very nice for Java but less so for C++).

dev-c++ and MingW dev studio use the same compiler so if you want a good IDE (since they both use the same compiler)

just flip a coin

(me i use both, well actually i use dev-c++ more often because it has a good update utility and its been around a lot longer so im used to it)

Borland Turbo C++ and MinGW are awesome.

You can buy Visual C++ .NET for less than $110 .... you just don''t get as much stuff.

He is damn right. I use it for perl, html, python, and anything else I am working on that is just a small number of files. And if you don't mind editing config files, you can customize it a lot.

And on that note does anyone know of a compiler that correctly compiles Loki?... MSVC is surprisingly bad at handling complex template operations!!

For a while i used Dev-Cpp and Mingw. Now i use Visual C++ .NET 2003 and its the superior IDE/Compiler by far IMO. If you have any money left, go for it.

The Standard version of cl.exe(the c++ compiler executable from VC++) is available in the .NET Framework SDK. Unfortunately, it doesn''t include the C++ standard library, which makes it somewhat less than useful.
