Hi, Where can I find some resources about engine design (papers / books)? There is a lot of stuff about patterns and similar things, but I would like to look at some ideas how to properly design a game engine. What freesource engines are worth looking at in order to learn engine design?

Have a look at OGRE. It's open source and has IMHO a good architecture which is also documented.

For patterns you _need_ this book:

There''s a series of articles here on gamedev called Enginuity .

All of the above mentioned resources are great. GarageGames.com also has some articles on the design of game engines. If you''re looking for a good book to buy get "3D Game Engine Design : A Practical Approach to Real-Time Computer Graphics".
