Newb question: I have an aol connection on windows XP. On my XP box, ICS is enabled and i have modified the registry to allow ip forwarding. On my linux box, using mozilla, i have set the proxy to route http through my XP box. The only thing i seem to get is my apache page for every site i type in on mozilla. This happens when i set the proxy to port 80 or 8088 (obviously none of the other ports come up with anything). What is the problem here?

The linux and xp boxes are connected by wired LAN.

Windows XP''s ICS is a gateway/router, not a proxy. Set your Linux box''s gateway to be the internal IP address of your Windows machine, and then clear your Mozilla proxy settings, since you don''t need them.

Setting the gateway is probably dependent on your distro. On my Gentoo box, it''s in /etc/conf.d/net. Check your distro''s docs or website to figure out how to do it.

EDIT: ze_jackal's advice is better, try that first.

whatever you type you get to your local page?
sounds like a DNS problem.

is the apache page on winXP or linux?

what does it say if you ping google.com from your linux box?
what does it say if you ping 216.239.39.99?

if pinging 216.239.39.99 works try entering that in mozilla (in the address bar)

if you can ping both google.com and 216.239.39.99 but can't open them then its not a DNS problem but something else.

I cannot ping google or its ip. I have set the gateway for my xp box (the server) and it comes up with no internet sites on the linux box. Is there more to it than settting the gateway?

should the destination network ip be set the same as the gateway ip?

can you ping aol's ip address (not aol.com but the one winXP connects to for internet access)
if that doesn't work I can't think of anything else but a quick google search brings up a possible temporary solution

EDIT By googlyeyes: sorry about that michalson, I thought it was some wierd firefox bug so it took me awhile to figure out. I did fix it right before you did though
