I am looking to find out how to generate terrain randomly; I know you can make terrain by a simple height mapping technique but I was wondering what other ways would be a good way to do this; I wanted to see if I could make a simple terrain engine that generates a hilly terrain landscape randomly, but im not sure how to do it would I use a vertex buffer or something else? Could someone point me into the right direction? Thanks

Look at perlin noise, mid-point displacement (diamond square algorithm), particle dropping, fault line displacement. You can use them to generate the heighmap. There''s a few article in game gems 1 & 2 if you have them.

ive made a randomly generating terrain engine based upon the Focus on Terrain Programming book... thats quite good (the book i mean)... well if you know the basics of terrains already... but fault formation and midpoint displacement are easy enough to implement and are quite good...

Write an app that builds the terrain from a heightmap bitmap then build random bitmaps.

That part''s easy, write another app to do that. You have parameters like the size of the HM, the height of the first hill, the number of first hills, the size of the first hills. After that, divide the size of hill by 2 but increase the number of hills.

Each hill''s randomley placed.

I''ve got a prog to do it if your interested (crafted by me).
