Well, I have this set of classes in my head that can represent a datbase. But I am not sure how to actually write the file out. How is a database file actualy constructed? What format is it in? Binary? xml? txt? I''m looking to store between 5-10 thousand items with their own properties, all either floats or strings. But I want it to be pretty darn fast. If you look at itunes on either windows or mac, one of the interfaces is very similar to the structure in itunes. If I am being to vaugue let me know, and thanks for any response or specific places to look.

Databases are usually stored in a B-Tree format with some form of index.

For a quick embeddable solution to your problem I would go download the sqlite library at http://www.sqlite.org and use one of the C++ wrappers they link to to make your job even easier.
