I''m not entirely sure whether it would be viable to develop an application using VRML,because i have never used or learned it. Though i recently seen an application(VRML)that was quite impressive.Obviously,i''m not talking about developing the next Doom using VRML though this application had support for OGL and DirectX.I''m talking about games such as CSI(Crime-Scene Investigation)and the like. The ammount of poly''s in this application and the interactiveness(is that even a word?) was very impressive. Have any or many games like CSI been developed with VRML? What exactly is VRML? any links or articles for game dev related stuff using VRML? opinions please !
Why would anyone in a right state of mind attempt to get blood out of a stone?? don''t they know its made of stone..doh.

VRML is nothing more extraornidary than a plain 3D file format specficitation. It''s not an API, not an engine.

There are tons VRML players out there, and many 3D modelling packages can export/import it. Such players ususally use OGL/D3D to render the VRML scenes, and some have their own software renderers.

Again, it''s just a *file* format.

If you wanted to come up with an animation format to compete with Macromedia''s Flash swf file format, you might consider VRML. In that sense, you could write an engine that uses VRML files, but that is significantly different from writing an engine using VRML.

On the other hand, I looked into it and decided that W3C couldn''t spec their way out of a brown paper bag. I think they failed on XML and I think they failed on this. [I will hold off on the rant about how S-expressions and certain languages that have lots of irritating parentheses.]
