What is the best way to set up some base code for a 2d game applet? I have a JApplet now which runs as a thread and paints to one panel (dbl buffered) and then uses other panels for the GUI. I am just using the basic drawing functions (fillRect, drawString) etc.. is there any great benefit to using the Graphics2D stuff? And is the threaded applet I have set up the optimal way to go?

As long as there aren''t billions of threads and they aren''t blocked too often then it should be fine. Don''t know about benchmarks between using the 2 techinques you described, if you find out do post!
