Hi all! Here''s yet another video of my friends and I having fun with fire. If you didn''t think that the other videos I showed you were of actual explosions, I think you might think differently about this one (even if it''s a relatively small explosion). To check it out click here. Requires DivX codec to play, and the video is at 1/4 actual speed. Let me know what you think! This is just a small test for a summer project my friends and I have in mind, which is to build a small, scale city and blow it up. When we do that we''ll make the buildings look realistic, use bigger charges and probably use thinner walls with pre-fractures. - Alex Broadwin - Domini Noctum Games - My Journal - The All-Knowing One

That was cool.

I think you should set a pumpkin on fire and kick it.

Did you use a slow motion camera of some sort?

No, I'm not a terrorist. I'm just out for entertainment :-D. I used a Canon ZR-65 to record. The slow motion effects are post-work.

Since legal explosive supplies are limited where I live I had to use model rocket engine powder to make the explosives. The powder was packed tightly around a rocket engine ignitor and wrapped in paper and tightly wrapped in tinfoil. Then I duct-taped the charges onto the inside walls of the balsa-wood building with one side of the charge weakened to direct the blast.

Rocket engines are my ''weapon'' of choice too. If you want a more powerful explosion with much more of a bang, use a stronger container than ''tightly wrapped tinfoil''. Ive made a couple out of used Co2 cartriges (metal cylanders about the size of a roll of 50 pennys). Those things are powerful as hell. You''ll end up with balsa-juice!

Well, I try to avoid what would otherwise be unbreakable barriers. I don''t really want to make a bomb that could kill someone...

ammonium triodide crystals arnt all that legal either. In order to get the iodine crystals, I had to do quite a bit of convincing to the guy at the pharmacy that it was a school science experiement, and that it would be supervised, and in the end, we had to get my friend''s parent, who is a nurse at the hospital, to come with us and say it was ok.

Rocket engines are by far the best bet.

Exceedingly cool.

That''s actually one of the things I''ve been meaning to look into - getting footage of explosions to use in games. What are people''s recommendations on such matters?

You know, you can make it with laundry amonia and iodine... Mix it together, shake it up, run it through a coffee filter and when the stuf left in the filter dries it becomes ammonium triodide. Careful with it if you do it. I have detailed instructions somewhere if you want me to email them to you.

EDIT: My mistake, I'm thinking of NITROGEN triiodide... still:

"
[NITROGEN TRIIODIDE]

Mix 1 pint of laundry type Ammonium with 4 ounces of drug store type Iodine.
Shakewell for 5 minutes. Pour the mixture through a Mr. Coffee Filter.
Throw away the liquid. The dark red mud like material in the filter is
nitrogen
Triiodide. When dry it is very unstable. very very very sensitive to
friction, heat, shock, static electricity, etc. Apply wet
and allow to dry. Very High Explosive. So sensitive that it will explode
when touched with a feather."
(I DO NOT SUGGEST YOU TRY THIS, IT IS DANGEROUS, ASSUME YOU WILL BE KILLED IF YOU MAKE IT) <-- Had to say that...

I''ve never really tried that... but I would suggest a good digital camera and (unless it''s a VERY good camera) do it during the day. Maybe you could put a black backdrop behind the explosion or some such.

Also, you could try plugging both ends of a hobby rocket engine (instead of just one) and igniting it. That should explode. Never actually tried it, though.

Slow motion, huh?
Get a huge block of Uranium and sit on it. This is what I call slow-motion.

Is model rocket powder more powerful then my "black powder replacement" I use in film canisters tightly wrapped in duct tape? If I upgrade to co2 cartriges (the best idea i've ever heard, how do you plug the hole, i assume with fuse but what else, im not sure if i would like hot gluing a bomb, maybe caulk?, supper glue?

Pixol: What would ignite it then, a small spark. If this stuff is stable when wet, just poor it into a metal tube, put a fuse in it and cap it off. Dont ever open it again, unless with a lighter.

We used model rocket engine ignitors to set ours off. I connected them to a generic controller box that I built originally for use with an electric-valve-controlled air cannon. Makes it nice and easy to set off from a distance (a good idea, last I checked).
