I''d suggest you learn C/C++ before even looking at a dev kit.

PS2Linux is not a dev kit, although it can be used for running things on your PS2.

OP: In order to use a language on the ps2, the compiler must be able to target the processor the PS2 uses. (or a scripting language that doesn''t get compiled) GCC is the only compilers that target the PS2 that I can think of.

Seriously, the PS2 Linux kit, _is not_ a PS2 Dev kit.. All it does is let you run Linux on your PS2, and write interesting stuff using the PS2''s interesting graphics hardware.. Programs that are designed on thE PS2 Linux kit can''t be burned to CDs and played in regular PS2s, only on other PS2s with the Linux kit..

So, in a way, it''s a kit that allows you to develop stuff on a PS2, but by no means is it an actual PS2 dev kit.

Its not a TOOL dev kit but it it a piece of kit used for development so techinicly speaking it is. My point still stands though. You shouldn''t pay $200 for something if you''re just a beginner.

Personally I don''t see the point in PS2 linux, like someone else said it can''t be used on a PS2 without linux, it doesn''t use the normal sce libaries that the TOOL kit and official compiler use so the experience it gives you isn''t really any different to programming for any other platform.

Its a nice toy but that''s about all, if the HDD could be used for games aswell as linux then I might has considered it but as it is you might as well just be using a PC.

you are very right klowner, but he simply could have said that with out trying to bring someone down who was only making a suggestion. too many posts on these forums end up focusing on the buzz word used and deviate from the original question or problem. as you said, the advantage of devloping on a ps2 linux kit as opposed to a pc running linux is the hardware that you have available.

What? "PS2Linux is not a dev kit, although it can be used for running things on your PS2" was too inflammatory for you? I guess you were too upset by his ''attack'' to notice that he actually did answer the guy''s question clearly and satisfactorally right after that sentence.

Aight, how ''bout some specifics, and then an end to this particular tangent.

The PS2 linux kit, as sold by Sony, is a collection of hardware, software, and documentation. The software and hardware enables you to exert greater direct control over your PS2, making it less of an embedded system and more of a computer. Although you can use it for pretty much anything you''d use a computer for, and many people have, Sony has marketed the PS2 linux kit to amateur game developers as a way to develop games for the PS2. The documentation provided is tailored towards making full use of the PS2''s multimedia and game-control capabilities, and the software includes various packages that allow you to develop software using them.

To continue, you are not licensed to distribute PS2 Logo type games, but you are allowed to distribute the source code and executables you create (as mentioned, the /binaries/ only run PS2's with the linux kit, if you write portable code you can build for other platforms in addition to the PS2).

The primary information that is not given out with the Linux kit is information about the DVD drive. IIRC, Sony provides a driver that lets you access data DVD's. This is to limit thier liabilty for DVD encryption (De/CSS) & DVD zones (US, Europe, China, Japan, etc...) issue, and keep the proprietary PS2 disk authentication scheme a trade secret.

You can develop code with the PS2 linux kit using any of the multitude of languages available for linux. With the advent of Mono, you might even be able to use C# or VB.Net.

If you're new to linux, cut your teeth on x86 Linux with Redhat, Mandrake, or SuSe.

In therory yes. You can take advantage of the special hardware in the PS2 as well. In practice it can be difficult to port applications to foreign platforms.

The trade-off between price and quality does not exist in Japan. Rather, the idea that high quality brings on cost reduction is widely accepted.-- Tajima & Matsubara
