I`m trying to create a plane as in the diagram at a vertex. I no the vertex normal and the coordinate of the vertex. If I knew the vector perpendicular to the vertex normal it would be straightforward. How can I do this without knowing this vector or Is it possible to calculate it and if so how? Is probably real easy just cant think how to do it! [edited by - Paul7 on April 18, 2004 3:42:10 AM]

Pick any up vector that is not colinear with the normal, such as <0,1,0>

Cross the normal with this vector to get a vector v.

Cross v with the normal to get a vector u.

u and v are two orthogonal vectors that form a plane perpendicular to the normal.

Don''t forget to normalize u and v

clarify the question please, it seems impossible

from my point of view all you know is:

a vertex in the plane, and a vector that lines in the plane[also starting from the same vertex]

seems like infinte solutions to me.

e.g. that quad could have normal of and still be OK

What I was wanting was a plane that lies in the same plane as the normal. Using ironpoints method works great apart from only need the vector v, using vector u will give me a plane perpendiculr to the normal. So to create the plane I just move along the vector v to get the bottom 2 points and then move along the normal and the vector v to get the top 2 points.

Thanks alot!
