So, I just recently recieved a $35 order from Games Workshop and they threw in a complimentary miniature! It totally suprised me. Talk about an excellent business strategy, I''m now planning a trip to Baltimore to check out their store.
Anyone recieved extra stuff? It''s the best stuff, you know.

I was once at a game store that I think was a Games Workshop. There were some kids playing some game with miniatures and one of them went up to some sixty year old guy who was working there and asked him about a game rule. It was something about a unit attacking, and the guy said that he could only if he was on a hill. For some reason it seemed like he was making that up, because I wouldn''t have expected him to know anything of the game. Are the people who work there actually knowledgable about what they sell?
from what i understand, the people that work at the store are actually expert painters as well.
And really, the rules aren''t hard to learn. If you play often, you pick them up.
However, I will never be able to memorize the dice charts. That''s what I have my friend Keith for. He is such a dork, he can memorize that chart and all the rules in like half an hour, he practically has the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy of books memorized, but he can''t remember a damn thing when it comes to his classes, or having an appointment to be somewhere.

I used to play Warhammer 40k or whatever... then it got boring and i had put like $500 into my army. I ended up selling my army to someone I know for $10. I used to know all the rules.. well most of them at least. But i have forgotten them now.

I definatly think the knowledge of the staff at stores depends on the store. At our wargames club we had some very unflattering things to say about our "local" store.
I remember the rules, for Warhammer Man ''O War and Space Marine even now, including the hit/ to wound charts for Warhammer (ah how sad). It always annoyed me that strength/toughness counted was much more important than weapon skill since my main army was High Elves. The only real problems with rules always arose with special abilities, magic items or spells.
Personally I''ve never recieved any free stuff from them except with the White Dwarf magazine and the best thing that ever came with that was a nice little game called Warmaster which recreated the battle between Horus and the Emperer in Horus'' ship.

They underpay their staff to a crazy level. It''s ok if you don''t have any financial responsabilites but you can''t pay rent and utilities in cheap miniatures. So often you will find staff members in many stores very fed up with the company and the hobby. However many staff members retain a huge knowledge of the product lines and rules systems. I worked for GW in retail and for Forgeworld. While I had an incredable knowledge of the games systems compared to the toher staff members they were older than myself and new more about the background and history of the universes and had good rule knowledge. You have to remember that these people play games many times over and the rules arent that complicated enough that they cant be learnt by heart. As for free stuff, it''s easy to pop a free miniature in a mail order box, they dont cost anything. Try getting a large order with broken or missing parts, they will generally send out replacements and extras because it really doesnt cost much and keeps customers happy.
Every time I go to the local mall, I am tempted to learn a bit from the Games Workshop store. But then I get there and realize it would be an extremely expensive hobby, so I contend myself with Age of Empires.
One day, though, I''ll be a paying costomer.

It''s a complete money sink and most of the gamers are worse or as bad than ones you''d meet on xbox live. That''s taking into account the smell though. However if you find a good group to game with its worth every penny.
I too wanted to get into the wargaming scene but had little money to do it with. Where did I turn? LEGOs. Lego wargaming is pretty fun and there are some very involved rulesets on the internet (I made my own simpler ruleset though).
One the coolest thing about lego wargaming is that you can easily incorporate deformable terrain. Enemy army about to crush you? Lauch a rock from a catapult to cause a landside to halt their charge.
It should cost very little. If you''re like any average nerd, you already have a ton of legos. Just make them into units and pick up a ruleset and get playing. I''m looking into buying some more legos of ebay (the new legos they sell nowadays are trash) to expand my world and armies. Legos are just far cheaper and more flexible than miniatures. That and they bring back nostalgic childhood memories.
