Its about time... I''m finally getting a new graphics card for development and I don''t know which one to get, can anyone recommend any new, powerful graphics cards? -After all my demos... small ones... had an average fps of about 15.

How much are you willing to spend on one?

Wait. Either buy a new high end or mainstream DirectX 9c card or wait for current prices to drop (because of the new generation DirectX 9c cards).

you can get Radeon 9800 pro 128 mb for £140, which is what, $200? That''s not top of the range, but damn close. Personnaly, I would not consider buying a a graphics card more than £150, so for that kind of money, that''s what I''d get (and that''s what I have ).
Everything is better with Metal.

Its not bad, 9800XT is almost 2x better than 9600XT, but, you can be sure itl run Doom3 and HL2 on high quality smoothly.

Yes, but if the question is regarding game programming, maybe the top of the line card isn''t the best choice. The faster the hardware, the quicker you are satisfied because it runs at 80 fps on your system. Having a slower card will not only save some money but also make you optimize a bit more until it runs smoothly on your card as well. Few people have a $500 card, most people have a card that''s 1-2 years old. They don''t want a 10 fps slide show.

I have an 8500, an older card of course, it''s still pretty decent for games, it runs Colin McRae 4 and other recent games at 1280x1024, and if I program something that gets 100 fps I know that most people will be able to play it at decent speeds.
