Starting tomorrow, anybody who simply flames or insults in this forum will be censured. If you encounter a post that you would consider deriding, think again. Ignore it instead. Don''t bother to tell people that their requests for people to join them in creating MMORPGs are fruitless; silence can be much louder.

But I want to join a MM... err, nevermind.

I think this is a pretty good idea. The insult censoring should go on, but only in extremes; e.g. you are a #$!#$ #$@~%#$#$@3. Minor insults should, instead of being censored completely, be changed so that the wording is more tasteful, and more subtle so that one who is worthy of the insult will not notice it.

Special HTML tags could be used in certain situations when the insulter is actually right.

By the way, why can''t we say we want to make a MMORPG or to help to make one?

Is censorship really the best option?

Who is going to define ‘flame’? One person’s constructive criticism is another persons flame. Should I fear a comment like this one could get me banned?

If you can’t survive a little harassment from people you don’t know and will never meet, there is no way you will ever complete a huge problematic undertaking like an MMO game. Maybe it is a good thing to drop these posters initial expectations.

Then again, ignorance is bliss.

Unless you can make this thread a sticky, and force absolutely everybody visiting this forum to read it, I can''t really see how this can be considered fair warning.

Moderation of this forum will be done however the moderators (acting on behalf of the owners interests) see fit. Gamedev is a privately owned and operated site, to quote:
quote:

1) GAMEDEV.NET (herein "we", "Community") reserves all rights pertaining to the moderation of Community forums.

2) Moderation shall be defined as any activity designed to make our Community forums more consistent with our aforestated goals for Community interaction. The scope, bounds, and limitations of such moderation are at our discretion.

Apart from the guidelines offered in the FAQ the direction for all moderation is what we call "common sense". "Fairness" and "free speech", while observed, are solely at the discretion of the moderators to decide. When an exact rule (such as this one) is made, it is typically not up for debate - if you believe that there is an oversight you can email the staff directly. To understand this you must remember that Gamedev.net is a privately owned business (even if profit is not its primary objective). If a business put up a sign saying that you must wear shoes in their store because they don’t want the oil and stink, they are typically not interested in you arguing that your feet are clean or won’t mess up the floor. It’s their business and so they get to decide what is ok on their property (if there are special circumstances like if you are in cast and can't wear shoes, contact the staff by email). But in general the whiny complaints and weak “I know better then you, the people running the website” arguments have no influence on decisions.

To make it really simple, if you think a post might get you in trouble, you should reread it and then change it until you don’t think it is stretching the line. I’ve lost count of the number of times people open their post with “this is probably not appropriate” or “this will probably get close”, then act surprised and offended when they get moderated. Use some common sense people.

Due to the recent title change and content of this post, I should make it clear for anyone new to the site that I am not an owner. If one of the owners posts something that contradicts with this post, their post supercedes this one. Unless that happens however you should consider this post, and Oluseyi's, to be their will by proxy

Finally!

I do hope you will have the courage to stick to it, though.

Oh, pipe down, will you? I was just pointing out the pointlessness of this thread.

If I was directing my post at you I would have quoted or otherwise referenced you. Presumption is always the first step towards making a mistake.

An introduction to the forum the first time a user post would be cool. Something explaining what are the common things newbies post and why they won''t get many answers.

How about trolls? Can we bash them senseless? Carbonise them? Are they allowed to roam freely on those forums now? Can I troll? Who will defend the weak against them?

Oh! Oh! Let me shine your boots, sir! Can I water your horse? Did I tell you you''ve always been my hero? Have you had dinner yet? My mom''s turnip pie is the best in the region!

I think this is a great policy. I''ve felt that the forum has lost most of it''s value to due consistent flaming of any and every post.

Lately Oluseyi''s and Michalson''s behavior starts to remind me of bishop_pass'' more and more... Have some respect for the community, will ya? The amount of time you put into this site is appreciated, however your godly powers are no reason to treat others with disrespect.

How, exactly, are we treating others with disrespect? It''s unsatisfactory to make vague allegations without supporting them with specifics. I reckon that you''re just a disestablishmentarian who views GDNet''s desire for order as an infringement on some mythical "rights" of yours.

Of course, you''re free to disagree.
