Yesterday I was playing tetris or something equally useless and suddenly all my IM accounts signed off. I pinged google and I got the dreaded "request timed out." I live in a college dorm, so I''m on the university LAN. The weird thing is, all my network settings seem normal. The DHCP server has given me an IP that seems normal (the first 3 octets are what they should be), and when I do a repair it assigns me the same IP address. When I ping www.google.com it says "pinging www.google.akadns.com with 32 bytes of data." Is this a normal thing to happen? When I get back to my computer I''ll see if I can still see other computers in My Network Places. (I''ve finally stopped calling it Network Neighborhood!) I''ll also compare settings with my roommates. Any ideas? ___________________________________________________________ Where to find the intensity (Updated Mar 20, 2004)

I changed my IP address to something else on the same subnet and it works now.
(I specified manually instead of using the DHCP server).

You probably just need to install the latest version of the Internet.

Now I have it manually configured with the exact same settings as the DHCP server was giving me, and it works! WTF?

I''ve had problems like this one before, and 99% of the time it involved my network card being a piece of crap and dying on me. Try putting a new card in the machine and see if the problem persists.

It would have been better if I died permanently, because that would mean Amish.crapPostOnGdnet == false.

Anyway, it''s bad to manual configure your IP address. If the DHCP server would decide to rotate it''s DHCP pool and assign your IP address to another computer you get network conflicts. The network admins would probably hunt you down and impregnate your tomota plant(Or worse).

Change it back to dynamic and get a better network card.
