I''m wondering if anybody knows what the programming field is like in Germany and Russia. Either game programming or just general programming. I lived in Germany for about 5 years as a kid and loved it so I am planning to move back out there after I graduate. I need to do some research on what the market is like over there before I commit myself to this though. Are there good opportunities for employment in Germany or Russia? I include Russia because I am fascinated with eastern Europe and would really like to live there for a while. I am polish myself and would enjoy going to Poland but from what I have found on the internet there seem to be good academic opportunities in Poland but not much of a job market in CompSci. As for the languages: I am learning German now which has been fairly easy for me since I was fluent as a kid and I will start learning Russian next semester. That gives me 3-4 years to learn both these languages so hopefully I will be fluent enough by then to be employed in either country. If anybody lives in either place or has worked in either place or knows of the job situation over there I would appreciate any information. Thanks.

I live in the Netherlands(German neighbours) and programming opportunities are nice here. There alot of work to find where I am as a programmer. I myself do mostly general programming with databases.

Game programming sucks here, but I dunno about Germany.

I live in Germany and educated computer scientists (5 year university course, we call it "Diplom", it's equivalent to a master) don't have many problems - my experience. only people without a formal education are really having a hard time now and are often unemployed.

I don't know what field you want to go in, game programming is not really great in Germany, it's rather industrial programming (Siemens, BMW, VW, Daimler, Bosch,.....) which can be fun as well

concerning Russia:

the language is easy to learn, i didn't have many problems with it. living in Russia is quite cheap (and quite dangerous in some parts). You are not really paid a lot as a programmer (or at any other normal job) - that's as much as i remember my Russian teacher saying about Russia.

Thanks for the replies. I will not be done with school for about 4 years but I will graduate with a masters degree when I am through. Germany seems like my best option and I will just have to visit Russia during the five weeks of vacation I am told that most Germans get. I would be happy with any kind of CompSci job so I am glad to hear that there are opportunities there. Thanks again.
