Computer problems ...

Original Post
I have a computer problem. There can only be two cases each of which happens randomly.
1. Computer didn't even want to turn on. Only the power LED is on, and it's not even reaching the boot-up screen, just blank screen. Occasionally it turned off by itself.
2. It does turn on, but it would freeze randomly afterwards.
I first thought it was the RAM. I took the RAM out, and turned my computer on. It should beep, right? It didn't. So it's the motherboard, but this is a laptop, how am I supposed to replace the motherboard?
When the RAM is taken out, one of the following occurs:
1. Power LED is on, then the computer turns off. Same case as #1 above.
2. Power LED is on, HardDrive LED is on, then it turns off. It seems like it's trying to find the RAM but some reason it fails and turns itself off.
No beeps heard.
Even worse. This is weekend. Campus is dead during weekends. I am totally dead. I have no computers, I can't do anything. And as I have said in my other thread, I suddenly realized how empty my life is without a computer. Imagine, spending a weekend alone without computers, what are you going to do? No girlfriend. I don't have my friends' phone numbers. I meet them weekdays, but not weekends. I have nothing to do. It's 8:00 PM now. I might spend this night in the pub again, playing pools. This is so boring, I might get drunk for the first time :/ (hope not). But tomorrow is still Sunday...one more day until campus is alive again.
Gosh, this is the most boring weekend I have ever had. I just realized how lonely and nerdy I am without a computer. This is bad. This is terribly wrong. I think I should find a new hobby...

It can''t be that bad, you managed to post here.
Curious, what brand is your computer?
It could be your harddrive too.
Hope you have warranty.
btw, yes it does suck without a computer, but you know what, go read a book or watch tv or go out, you can find plenty of good things to do

With no beeps, it sounds like bad RAM.
If you have a friend or another computer you can borrow the RAM from you can/should test it.

Ohh and please make your thread title more descriptive. Thanks.

quote:Can''t be. All data is still there. I can still log on to Windows, play games, but it would just randomly freeze.

quote:Wait. I took the RAM out, and normally it would beep right? If it beeps, the motherboard is fine and is crying because there is no RAM. But if it doesn''t beep, that means the motherboard is broken.

No, its my understanding that without RAM it doesn't even do a POST, So it wouldn't beep.

But I don''t really know what to say![]()
"Computer Problem" works.
quote:That's good to know (why the heck that Dell guy told me that?). Well, still, there are 2 pieces of RAM, I took one out, problem still there. I switch with the other one, problem is still there. So, it appears either both RAMs are bad or it's the motherboard.

I doubt it it''s the PSU. It''s a laptop and I am using the adapter AND the battery, and they are both in good working condition.
I am posting this from the computer. It hasn''t freezed up yet so far. I noticed one thing, when you Ctrl+Alt+Del, the task manager shows you the total amount of physical memory, how much left, and how much used. I noticed before that this shows some weird number:
Not the exact number, but you get the idea. Avail + System cache != Total.

Usually: (Avail+System cache!=Total)==true

quote:By that much? Right now it seems displaying the correct number. System cache = 140M. Available = 90M. Total = 256M. 140 + 90 != 256, but there is not that much difference. Last time it was 64 + 5, while the total is 128.

My sytem now: 102+89!=256.
