I did a search for cloth-simulation articles, found one I liked, and implemented it. In it''s basic form I understand completely what is going on, and it works. The paper I got it from, however, says that you can avoid doing the square root (with an approximation). I don''t understand that bit, and if I use their code blindly my cloth explodes, leaving my character naked and alone http://www.ioi.dk/Homepages/thomasj/publications/gdc2001.htm If you go about half way down (a search for Taylor-expansion would do) you see the bit where he removes the sqrt. Can anyone explain it to me?

Well, I''m not sure it''s the same thing, but I have a guess. It might be expanding the function into its equivilant taylor series.

It''s probably Newton''s method and not a taylor series as taylor series don''t work well for things like logarithms and squareroots.

Newton''s method comes from a truncated Taylor series.

I think he is right because newton''s method can be continued out to infinity just like the taylor series for sine/cosine
Why don't alcoholics make good calculus teachers?Because they don't know their limits!Oh come on, Newton wasn't THAT smart...

Newton''s method is a 1st order method that is derived from a truncated Taylor series expansion. It doesn''t extend to higher order, though there are other methods that are based truncated Taylor expansions with more terms.
