Its a stable, free OS.

Personally I like it. But I''m not sure if it''s for everyone quite yet. I''m one of those people who love to sit around and tweak my OS forever so I think it''s great. Honestly the main reason I like it is because it''s a fun OS that actually requires some knowledge to use.
Plus, you can''t beat the price.

It is great for servers
FreeBSD is better thou
FreeBSD is better thou
I tried it a few months ago...
I loved the stability, but i had troubles getting the ISDN-, Sound- and graphics card running (It was a Rage128, and i had to wait for the Suse X-Server whatever thing.).
And if u aren''t used to dos, don''t even try Linux (upper/lower case sensitivity, / instead of \ etc...)
Another big thing was the Lilo boot thing... I wasn''t able to run W98 on the same computer without using a bootdisk
(It stopped at the 2nd L (LI_)
But maybe in a few months i''m willing to try the newest version... (I hate my ISA ISDN Card grml grml)

phueppl1: I had the same problem. That thing with the cylinder count being higher than 1024.
I got the new version of redhat and it was fixed though.

So far I have been unable to get it
. But I am getting it soon. It is mainly due to a lack of hard-disk space, so as soon as I get that 20GB I will be fine

I had a problem with the partitions i resized my partitions with partition magic and it messed up windows big time with linux on it. A time before that i resized the partition and linux crashed during set up and i had to have a new hard drive put in lucky my comp was insured. it really is a great OS but it messes up other stuff on the system.
p.s. Fanatic? Whoa! When did that happen?

A word of advice, DON''T USE LINUX''S PARTITION TOOLS! It always screws up my hard drive. Use something like partition magic if you are willing to pay for a tool, or use ranish partition manager (this let me fix what linux screwed up) http://www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/.
Ranish is kinda a low-level tool, so you do need to know what you''re doing. It also seems to have a glitch for making linux swap partitions. After you make it you have to change the id. Also make sure windows can read your new windows partition before you go through the trouble of installing linux.

>> Good for Games and programming? <<
Not very good for games programming, Windows is better since it supports more hardware. But for other types of programming though, it's good (since it comes with compilers, interpreters etc.). It comes with more software than any other OS I've seen, and on top of that, it's FREE!
Another nice thing about it is that you get the source code to almost everything that comes with it.
And it's not for everyone just yet. If you don't have any experience typing commands into a command shell, you might not want to try out Linux without a good book by your side. There's almost always something that requires you to use a shell when you first install Linux (X configuration files, setting up new users).
If something messes up stuff on the sytem it's Windows! (Overwriting the MBR without even letting us know for example). And why did you have to put in a new harddrive? Couldn't you simply boot with a DOS bootdisk, use fdisk to partition your hd the way it was before you tried to install Linux, and then run the Windows installation program? Resizing partions is always dangerous. It's better to do a clean install.

That is definitely the plus... But Windoze is still better for game programming (like Muzza said) because it supports more, and is easier to program for more hardware... Windoze is unfortunately taking over the market. If only they would release their source and help the Open-source movement

If MS releases the source to Windows everyone will see what a hack it is and noone will use it
That''s why they don''t release the source
They were considering it... But I haven''t heard anything else since I read that article... I hate using it, the only reason I do is because: You can''t beat that market share (also the reason why I program for it)... The world WOULD be a better place without it though

Actually I find the Linux disk tools quite usefull - compared to the MS version of fdisk. I always use the Linux fdisk/cfdisk rather than MS fdisk. The reason is obvious
You can''t even make ext2fs partitions with Microsoft''s fdisk
. It''s a shame I don''t have enough hd space to have it installed anymore...
A new harddrive, linux and BeOS..that''s somethign I could use right now..

What exactly is BeOS? I hear all this good stuff about it, but I don''t know what it is... Anyone care to enlighten me?
