Given the lack of book reviews on the matter here, plus the lack of frequent posting in the java forum, I am compelled to ask the question here. Could anybody recommend a good book to start learning java? I know C++ fairly well, and am most comfortable in an IDE environment. I would ordinarily go with the Deitel & Deitel Java: How to Program, but looking at it''s price tag (90 USD), I was wondering what books anybody else has read and found it useful. So, any recommendations?

The way I learned Java, which I recommend to anyone, is by reading a certification book. It will teach you all the details in a good order with no fluff. If my book wasn''t in storage, I would give your the ISBN off of it. Don''t go for any cram books, though.

Other books tend to concentrate one area or another and not give any ''under the hood'' explainations.

Well, if you don''t want to spend any money: there is always the Java Tutorial. I actually learned Java by taking CS courses, since that was the professor''s language of choice, I guess. It is not a hard language to pick up if you know C++ fairly well, you just have to get used to things like the fact that every program is a class, and interfaces(which are close to being pure virtual classes in C++).

There is also Bruce Eckel''s free java book online. From what I have read of it, it is pretty good.
