What are you thoughts on marijuana? I don't think it should be legal, but I think that there should be less concequences for it. In canada don't you only get a ticket? It's just so profitable I think that if its legal that there would be no demand. I think it helps me program too. It definetly has affected my concetration. I specificaly remember times switching between the form editor and code editor in vb and forgeting what I was doing. But I'm sure that happens to everyone after sitting at the computer for nearly 8 hours. I believe it helps me stay creative, it helps me look at problems differently. Does anyone else smoke before/while they program? As far as my short term memory, its shot. I have a hard time remembering to do my chores or even my dads surprise birthday party (but again I think its a general problem with lazyness). I would definatley prefer drinking over smoking. Smoking all the time just gets same 'ol. Any other users and your comments? edit: sorry about spelling I am not blessed with Word. [edited by - honayboyz on May 9, 2004 12:18:42 AM]

Yep that makes sense.

It''s just so profitable, selling weed now. If it becomes legal, everyone will be able to get it so easily that it would lose its value.

To prove this hypothesis, determine whether the sale of marijuana in Amsterdam (where it is legal) is primarily to tourists/foreigners or to indegenous users. If the former, then you may have a point; if the latter, then it won''t change anything.

That still doesn''t make sense to me.

I'm not sure I follow:

If the majority of sales are to local people, then the value of it will remain constant even if its legalazied. If the majority of sales are to people who are not used to this kind of availability, then the value will go down?

I think that the U.S. government has spent way to much time and money trying to convince people we "dont know enough about it to determine its uses" when there could have been some decent medical research funded with that money. As far as decriminalization goes, take a look at canada and tell me legalizing marijana is going to turn america into a nation of heroin addicts. Marijuana is the "Gateway Drug" after all...

Marijuana definetly is a "gateway drug". I have only done salvia and dxm since using weed but I have attempted to get my hands on premo (sp) and lsd. Once you''ve been high enough you realize that its not so bad and that you need to get higher. Has anyone had any good experiences with salvia? It seems to be a waste of money. I took a huge rip and just sort of felt a light-headed sensation, almost like smoking a cigarette (maybe not, i''ve only smoked 2 ever). And what about dxm? I took 2 400 mg capsules. 1 about an hour after the other. I just felt drunk, no halucinations, no vomiting, no crazy talk about me being the mesiah and my milktree spilling on my cookie bush like I''ve heard about.

Woah there honayboyz. I recommend editing your post. The way you stated it seriously violates the forum rules... and common sense. I think the mods would have tolerated this discussion, but not if you are asking people''s opinions on how good certain drugs are.

I''m not going to edit it, but i''ll be more aware of what I''m saying. I''m asking about experiences which I''m pritty sure aren''t illegal since you can just make them up. I''m not asking where to get drugs, if anyone wants to buy any, or that people should use them. I think I''m in the clear.

I''ve been using marijuana off and on for the past 2 years and not once have I ever gotten the urge to use other illicit (or prescription) drugs. Marijuana is only a "gateway drug" in a sense that when you buy it from somebody you may be exposed to other drugs.

As for my thoughts on it, personally I think it should atleast be decriminalized (in America).

As far as my short term memory, its shot.

I have to say that I found this to be the only real downside of smoking, plus it makes me even more introverted than I normally am. For me though, the memory loss was a big enough problem that I have quit. About 3 months after I stopped smoking I had a weird week where my mind just went completely fuzzy but then after that passed my memory was back to what it was before I started smoking. All in all I feel that marijuana is something fun to experience but not good to keep doing, it seems to have some subtle long-term effects.
As for creativity: for me it seemed to kick my mind into overdrive and caused me to make associations I wouldn''t normally make which helped me think up crazy ideas. It also helped me think things through logically as long as I could manage to remember what it was I was trying to figure out, which was damn near impossible at times.

As far as legality, I think it should be legal but I understand why it is not. For about 2 years I smoked, and was in no way different from any law abiding citizen except that I used an illegal substance. It did not lead me to do anything "harder" and it did not cause me to commit any other crimes. I did not hurt anybody, including myself, except that I watched 2 years of my life slip by in a blink while I did nothing productive. It''s a tricky drug. It is one of the safest pharmacological substances known to man, with many benefits, but it makes people lose sight of their future. It''s hard to achieve any goals when the present is made so enjoyable.

I''m trying not to rant but I stopped smoking about 6 months ago and I am still trying to figure things out and it''s a difficult subject to talk to people about rationally. On the one hand it''s fun, safe, and opens you up to a new perspective on things. On the other hand it''s not socially acceptable, it''s illegal, and it fries your memory. It''s all about trade-offs, and more and more I realize that my memory is pretty important to me and that smoking pot will do nothing but get me high, it will never advance me in my life. It''s hard not to think back on the fun times I had though and consider doing it "one more time".
I would really like to hear some experiences from other people who have given it up to see if I''m the only one who feels this way. I haven''t met anyone IRL who''s given it up, and people who have never tried it can''t understand it to discuss it.

I never thought of it that way.

How often do you use it? And do you experience any other side effects: temper, memory/concentration loss?

edit: to xlotl:

Since I've started smoking, (almost exactly one year ago, the end of last school year.) I've made the most amount of money (40hrs a week programming job), failed the most classes (junior english once (probably this term too), spanish, and photography), lost my best girl friend (who knows if its related), found a great pass-time.

I honestly just like puffing on my bowl, I don't really get high anymore unless I smoke 2 bowls of mids, since for about 2 months all I smoked was 50's.

I've tried to get myself addicted to cigarettes once but I only smoked 2. They said I'd want another eventualy, like in the morning, but the cravings never came. What a shame. No jk but I wanted to find a way to satisfy my craving to smoke in a more legal way.

What about physical performance. I am a swimmer (not the best but I'm decent). I only smoked before one meet. My first event I got my record split, I was very hyper and just let it rip. My 3rd event I had my worst time, I came down so hard. I don't ever weeze or cough flem, but i've only been smoking a year.

Marijuana should bare the exact same legalities as alchohol. I''ve done both (don''t tell the Army that ) and both are just about the same in their abilities to be detrimental to your ability to think clearly.

As far as marijuana being a gateway drug... sure, if you''re a weak willed loser. Besides marijuana I''ve tried LSD once. It was fun, but I don''t really think I''ll ever do it again. I just wanted to try it. I doubt I''ll really try any other drugs, most of them seem pretty pointless.

Salvia Divinorum is not illegal in the US, but is very strange. I only tried it once and I found it is definitely not something to just mess with. I was watching Fear and Loathing at the time and for a few minutes I thought that Johnny Depp was talking directly to me and all I could see was his huge face in front of me. I would suggest definitely staying away from this plant as it will give you no enjoyment. It is used in religous ceremonies and that is where it should stay.

The short term memorry loss associated with smoking pot is actually a temporary effect. THC actually puts brain cells to sleep, as apossed to killing them the way alcohol does. Often you will see "Burnt out" smokers who seem always to be brain dead. This is caused by not allowing the body time to rejuvinate. When stoners smoke for years and years it is possible to damage receptors in parts of the hyppocampus(part of the brain associated with short term memory). This is a prime example of the "anything in excess" theory.

I would probably classify myself as a light smoker, because I never really do it more than once a month. Last year I got into a weekly thing, but I''ve since backed off because I was getting too lazy. I''ve found that for the most part, my memory is almost fully restored about a week after my last session.

The funny thing about the short term memory loss was, I had no trouble at all recalling important things. For example, if I learned something new in a class or had an important assignment to finish I had no problem remembering it. It was the little things like where my car keys were, and where I put my wallet or shoes that always got me.

I find it quite silly that some drugs (eg. marijuana, heroin) are illegal, while other debatably worse drugs (eg. tobacco) are legal.
Perhaps they should all be made prescription drugs so that doctors can try to wean users off. (Or so doctors could take advantage of some of the medicinal properties of said illegal drugs.)

Oh yah, a ticket! That''s it! Dumbass.

In Canada (use your capitals, children), you get off with a warning for a small amount, and only get a fine for a large amount. You can''t get a black mark on your permanent record - unless you have a LOT or are trafficking it - IIRC.

Marijuana is as much a "gateway drug" as is punching someone in the arm is a "gateway" to killing them.
