Anyone here supposed to be getting a large number of locusts this week? I live in southern Indiana, US, and they are supposed to be comming late this week... I heard that we were going to be getting around 1.5 million per acre. Thats a lot of locusts. 35/sq ft! are any of you guys gonna experience this? What kinds of things you plannin on using em for? Where do you live?

I''m not too sure who is going to get the hardest, but I heard suthern indiana will be pretty bad...

My friends and I are thinking of capturing a bunch and letting them loose in school... Could be lots of fun

A bonfire might also be fun

Washington DC. We should be getting quite a swarm of them, but I''m not sure how we''ll compare with other areas.

You should go outside and lie down in nothing but a loincloth, puff your belly out, and pretend you''re an ethiopian.

I live in downtown DC, a few blocks away from the White House. Graduation at my school should be tons of fun this summer, since it''s held outside. Hopefully there''ll be cicadas crawling into everyone''s pants.

Cicadas, not locusts.

And yes, the news stations are going ON and ON about this. Should be any day now - or at least that''s what they''ve said for the past 5 days.

Yeah, I don't watch TV... especially news

I did find a nice map of this year's swarm:

I'm hoping they come before friday so my friends can unleash them into the school...

I second the flamethrower statement. Roast the little fickers alive.

Also, you should get grenades and strap them to yourself. When the locusts break through and start to swarm you, before you''re overcome, pull the pins. If you''re gonna go down, take as many with you as you can!!

Is this a yearly event like the salmon of capistrano?

I hear fried locust are supposed to taste like chicken, just like everything else that you''d never even consider taking a bite of.

This should be the week for them. All they''ve been waiting for is the soil temperature to get warm enough - 75 I believe. Since it''s going to be in the 90s this week around MD, they''ll start popping out. It''ll take a couple days for it to get bad - once they shed and start flying around it''s going to be nasty.

I live in VA as well, and we''re supposed to see a bunch of them. The first ones started coming out Sunday night. One of the nymphs was crawling up the couch toward my arm, so I was forced to kill him. There are probably a couple hundred husks on the big tree in our front yard from the ones that have already come out. I went running yesterday and the sidwalk was littered with them. They''re completely harmless though, and I kinda like the sound they make.

I do hear they''re good eating though. Anybody got any recipes?

No, apparently they live a 17 year life cycle. So they lay eggs, die after 3 weeks, and you don''t see em again for 17 years.

I watched one coming out of his husk last night and it was pretty cool. They kinda wiggle their way out and then hang on with their feet while their wings dry out.
