Hello, My company is asking what kind of notebook I''d like including different peripherals. This is just a survey of some powerful notebook for a software developer. What are the key ingredients? What hardware is good (drivers, etc.) and what hardware to stay away from? My first though is to stay away from wireless and go with an Intel LAN. What notebook do you have or want? Thanks, Kuphryn

Why stay away from wireless? It''s the wave of the future, and wired LAN and wireless LAN are not mutually exclusive, so consider hooking yourself up with an 802.11b/g adapter, if only for the future.

If you''re developing graphically-intense apps (as in, genuinely leading-edge), you''ll want a top of the line graphics chip. Right now I think the Mobility Radeon 9700 is tops from ATi (in the consumer range) and something in the geForce FX Go series (probably 5700) is nVidia''s best offering. That''s probably the least easy thing to upgrade, and one of the most important for a game developer, so don''t slack on it, even at the cost of portability and battery life.

Processors, memory, HDD space... Whatever you can afford. Try to get a fast HDD.

Later,
ZE.

I think it depnds on what kind of software you want to develop. If it''s games, then get a good video card, if it''s office/business applications, then it doesn''t really matter.
