hey guys, im having a serious problem with my computer from a cold boot, it will launch XP and after 30 or 45 seconds, the display freezes. the only way to fix it is to hard power down, and wait a bit. if i hit the reset toggle, it generally hangs before windows loads. if i start and jump into the bios i get the same problem. so i feel confident in saying the problem is not a windows issue. because of having to wait a bit before i can get it to load, and the semi-consistent amount of time before it hangs i believe i have a heat problem, which is odd, because i have a turbine-fan in addition to the basic fan. i also have the skinny ide cables. when i monitor the processor temp i find that it climbs from about 130F to 190F, after which it hangs. does anyone have a good idea of what temp a 2.66ghz P4 processor should run? if i have a heat issue im guessing it''s not at 190F, which is very near the boiling point for water, but honestly im not sure. can someone shed some light? 190F is *way* too hot. A Pentium 4 should be doing somewhere in the 100-130F range (depending on heatsink and air circulation) if its properly cooled (it will normally drop another 10F once you get into Windows and it starts letting the CPU idle). If it's going over 140F your cooling is not working properly and you should not be running the CPU at all until it's fixed.
