First let me say that I''m using C/C++ and the DirectX API. Now, in every game-programming book I''ve bought, each tells you what you need to get started in windows with creating a window and using the GDI SDK. However, I want a "definitive guide" to program in Windows to add to my collect/knowledge. Here are some books that have been suggested to me: 1) Programming Windows 2) Programming Windows with MFC 3) Programming Applications for Microsoft Windows The only problem with these books is they''re out of date. So is there a particular book you really use and like? If not, do you think I should wait until the next Windows API comes out (longhorn?) and search the barrage of books that will come out for it? Thanks.

Programming Windows, Fifth Edition by Charles Petzold is a great book for learning about how Windows applications work and how you can write then in raw Win32. The only thing about him is that I find he doesn''t like using wizards or IDEs. So don''t expect much ins ruction on utilizing MSVC to your advantage.

As for being out of date, you can still write Windows applications following that book. The only newer stuff is .NET, but if you''re not using that you''d still write Windows applications in C++ with MFC or Win32.
