Single drive RAID faster?

I have a single 120GB 7200RPM PATA100 HDD and my motherboard has onboard RAID. My buddy tells me that even though I have a single drive (and so I obviously I can''t stripe) if I run it through the on-board RAID controller it will be faster than the regular IDE channels. This doesn''t seem to make sense to me and I did some searching (googled "single drive RAID" and checked a few hard drive sites) but haven''t really seen anything on this. So is it true or is he a bit confused? Thanks! When you find yourself in the company of a halfling and an ill-tempered Dragon, remember, you do not have to outrun the Dragon...

Tell him he''s an idiot, you cannot use raid with one disk. At best you can use the onboard controller as a normal IDE controller with similar speed. The only difference would be if its a caching controller.

..Unless your RAID is an ATA100 and your onboard IDE Controller is an ATA66...

then you will see a performance increase simply by using the RAID controller, rather than the standard IDE channels.

Check the mobo specs.

My mobo has PATA133 RAID and PATA100 regular ide. But it doesn''t make a difference if you have a regular ATA100 drive anyway.
