Annoying PC Problem

When I boot up my computer, sometimes my monitors (I''ve got a dual monitor setup) don''t switch on. Sometimes it can take a couple of tries to actually get them on. When the computer does boot up properly it declares that there''s been a CMOS error and it has to load the defaults. If you go into the bios screen, change things and then tell it save it attempts to restart but fails and the computer just swithces off. This was happening a few months ago and I thought it was the power, at the time I was using the PSU that had some with the case and it was rather bad, I believe it was 125w (at least that''s what it said on the case of it) though I don''t see how my system could''ve actually worked with a 125w PSU. Anyway I upgraded that to a 480w Antec PSU and the problems went away, however today they just started showing again. Any ideas on what''s going wrong? Here''s my computer spec Athlon 1800+ XP 512mb Ram Geforce 4 TI 4800 1 40 GB HD 1 160 Gb HD

You could try replacing the CMOS battery (and making sure it''s in the right way/in correctly). Other than that your CMOS could have gone bad.

Yeah that may be a good idea but would a bad CMOS battery explain the monitors not being able to switch on first time round and the computer just powering down when it tries to reset?

Probably not, but I couldn''t say for sure. I know there are a few knowledgeable people about this in the day crowd though so I''d give it a wait for them.

What exactly do you have in your computer, the specs give a general idea, but are there any other boards in there, or do you have everything onboard but the graphics card? If so, I would try throwing out the other cards, and placing them back in until the problem recreates itself, and then keep the last card you added, out of your box. Otherwise, I would see if a friend has a dual monitor capable card, and then place that in your system and see if it comes up with the same results(of course this experiment would have to be repeated for a bit, just to see if that is the problem). Hopefully this information is useful to you, and good luck with getting your computer back up on its feet.

Yeah I''ll think I''ll give that a try, thanks
