I decided to be retarded and set up my personal computer as a webserver and well, it''s behind a router (wireless but that doesn''t really make a difference). Is there any way for a user on the outside to initiate a connection with my computer? Am I being specific enough? I would really liek to know the answer to this because it''s kind of bugging me how programs like AIM work behind routers.

Port forwarding on the router. Read some documentation about it that applies to your router.

Forward port 80 to your computer and all will be well. (Unless your ISP blocks port 80, then you're screwed)

Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

Some routers have an option called "DMZ" that exposes a computer on the LAN side of the router to the Internet. People can then connect to your router''s IP address, and the requests will be passed through the router to your server.

Also, you probably want to have your router configured not to let other computers access your LAN. Otherwise your megahurtz will get stoled.

Thanks guys, just TelNetted to my router and fowarded port 80 (as I originally figured when Magic mentioned port forwarding). ^__^ So bad or good: me hosting a small page on my 3mbit cable line?

Edit XP's telnet is absolute crap. I had to go DL PuTTY again ;;

You should be fine as long as you don''t have any large images or files, and you don''t see a huge amount of traffic.
