I''ve been thinking ripping my music to a different format other then MP3 for the longest time and now I think it''s time. Any good suggestions? MP3 is such an old technology. There must be better quality and formats available. OGG? I''ve heard a bit about SSG or something like that. I don''t care about compabability, I just care about the quality:size ratio.

Nah, I use WMA. I like 192kbps WMA, whatever anyone else might think, I think it sounds a lot nicer.

Talking about OGG, is there a program that convert CD audio straight to OGG? I usually get in WAV first then convert to OGG, which is a painfully slow process.

Yes, there are plenty of them. I''m a linux user so I can''t really point any out for windows, but at least in linux just about every program that can be used to rip mp3 files can be set to rip to ogg instead.

And to the OP... Is there a reason you don''t want to use MP3?

If you look at the various listening tests that have been done, MP3 scores pretty consistantly across all genres, it''s only lacking side that I know if is low bit rate audio.
OGG usually scores about the same as MP3, although it varies on genre, with one genre being quite a bit lower score than MP3 (although still better than WMA...) but it does WAY better in low bit rate audio and can often have smaller file sizes for same quality.
WMA... Despite all the hype from MS, I have not seen a single listening test that as not sponsered by MS that didn''t put WMA well below the worst case of both MP3 and OGG.

foobar supports ripping directly from cd to many formats at many different quality levels (but you need to download the extra plugins for it).

I''d go with CAR if I were you. You can have 16kb music files. ^_^

I love CAR! I have all my music in CAR format!

Then again, I''m deaf.
