I wanna make a game, not direct x, just a dos side scroller or something. I have read "Sam´s teach yourself c++ in 21 day´s". I don´t want to go into direct x right now, I wanna try something more easy(I hope) first. What can you guys reccomend???? If you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. I suggest that you download DJGPP.
It is a 32bit C++ compiler, that is just one step before windows.
To make life easier you could download a game engine (like allegro, or my own engine located at the site in my sigature)

why dont u want to get into directx?
its probably just as easy as dos programming, if not easier, and you can learn from the SDK

DJGPP/Allegro is a lot easier than DirectX. Get a handle on general game programming (not just graphics) and then get into DirectX. For DirectX programming you will want to use visual C++.

I went straight into windows and DirectX from console programs and it hasn''t hurt me.

me neither. I went from DOS 1024*768*8bit color (palettised) to DirectX 640*480*16bit color. It is a lot of fun that way

you can use md or mkdir, depending on how much you want to type. A directory is a folder. They are one and the same.

Definitely... Directories were around long before M$ decided to go cryptic with "folder", so learn it well.

A crash is also what happens when you run a DOS game, forgetting you were running Windows NT4.0, and then your monitor packs in permanently when changing resolution....

What's so dangerous about that? Won't it simply overwrite the MBR with the default Windows bootloader so Win will load automatically...? Oh I get it!

Crash...crash...that''s the sound your computer makes when Windows opens. Man...I miss DOS. Why''d they have to make a GUI OS, anyway? I''ve always felt like I had more power with a command prompt. I dunno...yeah, you can do a lot with click and drag, click and select, and all...but there''s just a different...more pure feel of using md instead of right clicking and choosing "New Folder."

I agree I remember going in and playing with the Config.sys and autoexec.bat. I can''t tell you how many times I had to boot off of a disk.
