Hello! I'm going nuts!!!! I really hate the DX7 Helpfile because I can't get the god damn f*****g ZBuffering to work, so if there are any gentle programmers out there willing to help me...Please do!! Do I really have to Enumerate the DepthBuffer bits? And what is the big difference between ZBuffering and Stencilbuffering (No flaming, New to 3D Programming) Pleased for any answers... Oh..And I'm using Direct3D IM..not D3DX Edited by - Metus on 8/26/00 9:55:16 AM

You should enumerate zbuffer to find one that matches. Not too hard really. If you''re new to it, I would suggest picking up Sams Teach Yourself DX7 in 24 Hours. Simple book, but right to the point to get you started. You''d have to look elsewhere for more advanced topics though (mostly texturing).

Also, when you setup the zbuffer, make sure you enable the renderstate.

This is really simple, and if you need any help, let me know - I should be able to post my code to handle it. (Sorry - don''t have time at this minute - gotta get going in a sec.)

Thanks for the reply...
I could buy that book..if I weren''t living in Sweden =)

The problem isn''t in the renderstate; itäs in the creation of the ZBuffer:

/*
DirectX7 Helpfile Settings for ZBuffer
*/
if(DirectDraw->CreateSurface(&SurfaceDesc, &ZBuffer, NULL) != DD_OK)
Failure();

But it ISN''T necessary to enumerate ZBuffer Depth?

no, if you know, what zbuffer your card uses,
it is not necessary to query, but i strongly
suggest, that you do so

the dx7 helpfiles show all necessary steps for
creating a zbuffer

its the 2nd C++ tutorial for D3DIM

worked for me just fine... but anyway, save
your nerves and use d3dx... its (probably) as
powerful as d3dim (see thread "d3dx over d3dim")
but a lot easier to use !

10 lines of code and you have a fully working
3d-enviorment... (and then you can use the same d3dim stuff)

so long
torsten

PS:
yes, usually i''m a fan of "doing all by yourself", but
it seems that d3dx doesn''t cut your possibilities, so
it''s cool using it
