ALmost everywhere I go, I seem to hear about the first Diablo''s "Hellfire" level. Is this a free add-on for the game? Or can I download it? And what IS IT?? Anyways, hope you can help. - eric

its an official add-on to Diablo. Go to www.planetdiablo.com and click on the hell fire link on the left or you can just go to www.planetdiablo.com/hellfire

Btw, it''s for single player only.

I love Game Design and it loves me back.

It was released by Sierra, if I remember rightly, and it''s not for free (unless they changed something).
Those aren''t bugs! They''re undocumented features!

Personally i think it was a waste of time. I was a real hardcore diablo player when i got it though.

The Hellfire add-on can probably be found for $10-$20, at least in the U.S. It's not going to magically make you a better player, but it does provide some nice eye candy for an already great game. I hear it also allows you to change the difficulty settings in single player mode, which really makes it much more worthwhile.

Hell refers to a difficulty setting in multiplayer. You can play single-player games in multiplayer mode if you want to - just select the LAN option. I never play in single-player mode anymore. The game is just too short! And when your character has reached level 26 earning experience is too tedious, and the monsters (even Diablo) are just too easy. While Blizzard doesn't support using your single-player save in multiplayer mode, you can grab a tool that lets you convert between the two types of save files at:

Couple o' Tips:

Try playing the Nightmare and Hell difficulty levels! Sure, it's hard, but when the monsters are dropping ~200 gold, Great Axes, and Full Plate on the first level...

If you want the very best weapons and armor, select Normal difficulty and play levels 13-14 with lots of resistance (Obsidian equipment works wonders!). Nightmare and Hell difficulty level monsters on the higher levels don't seem to drop any different equipment, and you can basically steamroll through any monsters on Normal difficulty by the time you are able to play Nightmare difficulty.

The first time I tried Nightmare difficulty, I was nearly wiped out on level 5 by some of those little blue guys...yes, the ones that run away every time you kill a monster...

In multiplayer mode, there is no save option because the game is constantly saving itself... Always back up your character using a Bobafett's Trainer before venturing into the Nightmare and Hell difficulty levels, as the uniques are terribly hard. Leaving all of your weapons and 100,000 in gold on the dungeon floors (from repeated trips to rescue your stuff) can spell the end of your priceless collections.

If you are a warrior, look for Blessed Full Plate in Griswold's inventory - it's absolutely necessary in Hell difficulty levels. You will need some _major_ resistance to fight the Hell difficulty monsters with any success, so keep your eyes open for rings, amulets, helmets, and shields that offer resistance. You may acquire a Cobalt Amulet and a Ruby Amulet (or something similar), so keep both (since they're so small) in your inventory, and equip whichever works best at the time. Magic resistance is the major stat down in the Hell levels.

If you are an archer, look for the biggest baddest bow you can afford. The best weapons are usually the ones that have bonuses of speed and hit percentage. Damage isn't bad either.

If you are a mage, get anything you can to increase your max mana - staves "of Sorcery" or "of Wizardry" or anything that provides a bonus to mana/magic will help you. Go for things that increase your magic stat over mana, because they will help you read the better books.

Whatever you do, keep a full belt of potions at all times! And _always_ carry at least one scroll of Town Portal, so you can run.

In multiplayer mode over a LAN (and no people connected), you can leave piles of gold and bulky equipment in town while you collect more. Then just sell off whatever you don't want, use the gold to buy Elixirs, and start a new game.

Hopefully, those things will get you started on the higher difficulty levels, but the monsters are still pretty hard. I still have trouble clearing out levels 13-16 with my mage by myself (on Hell difficulty, of course).
