*slaps forehead*
pun \Pun\, n. [Cf. Pun to pound, Pound to beat.] A play on words which have the same sound but different meanings; an expression in which two different applications of a word present an odd or ludicrous idea; a kind of quibble or equivocation. --Addison.
A better put on this word was made on the Beggar''s Opera, which, it was said, made Gay rich, and Rich gay. --Walpole.

A pun is where a word which has two or more meanings (sometimes where they sound the same, or similar, but are spelt differently, or other times where they are spelt the same) is used, where one meaning is serious and the other is silly but relevant to the topic of conversation.
eg in a conversation about fish where someone says ''In the first place ...'' which could be heard as ''In the first plaice ...'' (plaice is a type of fish). That''s not a very good example - whenever I am actually trying to come up with a pun I can''t do it; mine are almost always unintentional. No doubt other posters will give many better examples of puns.
If you are wanting to be taken seriously, or alternatively to draw attention to the pun in a more subtle way, you''ll add ''no pun intended''.
I hope that helps.
And the little green frog goes ...
