Original Post
The Clash of Civilizations is a computer strategy game that will sketch out pretty much the whole of history in game form. From its inception, the player will guide his civilization while making decisions about every aspect of its development. You've seen that before, of course, but one of the main goals of this project is to require less micro-management from the player (it will remain optional) One benefit of this would be the 4-hr game where you'd go from antiquity to the present while making only broad decisions. These might vary from player to player, but would include your civilization's diplomatic stance, economy, culture, government, and overall military strategy. Our goal is to develop a fast, entertaining, and realistic game which also gives players the option to "drill down" into any area they choose, there to exert a fairly fine level of control. If you want to play everything at its finest level, you’d have a 400-hr game…
Further setting Clash apart from others in the genre, truly our "Holy Grail", is a sophisticated AI far superior to that available in the commercial games. We are putting a lot of thought and work into AI. You can see a snapshot of what we’re doing on things like map AI onthe web page.
Current Status:
The Team of about 10 active members, is continually making progress on both the design and coding of game models for Clash. The available coders (More Needed!) are working up a series of demos showing what we have to date. We are committed to releasing a demo at every major milestone so we can get a Reality Check on how the game is working so far. We'll make sure we keep to our promise of Reduced Micromanagement, Entertaining Gameplay, and Great AI. As of Demo 6, we have an alpha version of the tiled graphics and substantial implementation of the military and economic models. Every demo is playable, although they don't have inspiring gameplay yet ;-) Just give us a few months! The next version will feature the first implementation of the new technology model, and an in-game tutorial for all those people who won't read the manual!
Coders, Designers, Graphics, & Interface Gurus wanted:
The Clash project is still looking for people to join. Especially needed are Java programmers attracted to this type of game, since the biggest bottleneck right now is coding. People interested in all aspects of design are also needed to help refine our game models. We also need graphics people (those we had for previous demos have taken off) and gui gurus and playtesters. Ultimately the game will be released as shareware (free demo, pay for full version) and collaborators will earn returns depending on the amount of work they've put into the project (TBD). But the most important reason to join is to be part of a team that works hard and is driving to create something unique in the genre!
If you're interested in participating, or just want to see what's going on, check out the Clash Web Site. From there you can get in the detailed overview of what we're doing, and follow a link to our forum. If you're interested in joining, and are Serious about doing Real Work on a dynamic game project drop me an email.
Come Check Us Out!

AMARAII:
Well, my top two issues in the military area right now are:
1. Is the mil model left behind by the previous guy any good?
2. Can someone with a knowledge of military history be found who is interested in determining the appropriate numbers in the models for a variety of ancient and medieval combat elements (and eventually early modern and modern, but that is for the demo following the one we're currently working on).
I think the answer to 1. is yes, and you can see what you think on the Scouting Model Page and the links within that page. The idea is to model the battles in a map square consistent with player and AI orders without involving the player directly with the battle details. This would allow accurate descriptions of the battle, and why it was won or lost.
You can read some discussion about the model here. It starts in the middle of the thread, but I think you could pick up some of the subsequent discussion if you are interested in skimming it. If you violently disagree with how the model works, I'd like to hear that too. You can put any comments in that thread.
As to question 2, you can judge if you are a person for consideration for this job
TBD for the model is how to handle naval and air power in a way consistent with the rest of the design.
Thanks for your interest!

Hi All:
I just heard from our current webmaster, and he is too swamped with other things to continue as webmaster. So we''re hiring again ;-).
For those who haven''t seen it, the current Clash Web Site made by Dom and Kull is very ambitious. We need a current and attractive web site to pull those prospective team members in! And as we are moving forward into very active release-and-modify cycles having an active webmaster is critical...
So if you have the Time and the Skills, let me know if you''re interested! Redesign is certainly a strong possiblity, but first you need to be able to keep up with the day-to-day updates and info.

I haven''t seen the site; and can''t from here, but is it ASP, PHP, or anything else specific, or is it just currently done in html? Are you using CSS, and to what extent? Are you targeting cross-platform, just I.E., just Netscape? What server platform you running on? Any Database usage? Access, SQL.... ???
Be
SIt''s Da BOMB Baby!!!
Hi wrenhal:
The web site is just shtml. Dunno what CSS is, that''s why I need a webmaster ;-). Target audience is cross-platform, and I don''t know what the server is, tho I could find out if its important. Right now we''re not doing any database stuff etc.

Status update:
We now have a web master, and at least a part-time guy to run the military model.
Our fifth demo should be out in a week or two. You''ll be able to find it on the web site link above.
We still desperately need artists, especially for unit sprites and tile (isometric) graphics.
We could profitably also use a few more java coders, esp someone to take over leadership of the Technology model (someone fairly experienced).
We could also use a wordsmith type to spruce up the prose on the web page.
Thanks for checking the thread out

Hey Mark,
I was wondering if you are in the need of a Audio Engineer to create audio effects for your project. I have a long job history including 6 game developing companies and 2 commercial movie productions. If you need to see my resume or some of my work..
E-Mail me at James@hi-tide.net..
Jess,

Thanks for the interest Hi-Tide / Jess. I''ve emailed you a proposal.
We Always need coders, our current three really don''t make as rapid progress as we''d like, although its pretty good. I''ve emailed you...
We could still use someone to help out with design of the military model. Especially in terms of specs for land unit characteristics throughout the ages. Most needed right now is someone who''s interested in ancient armies. But other periods wouldn''t hurt. Additionally, the seapower and airpower models are not far along, so someone interested in those areas could have a big impact.

Well, the plea right now is for a wordsmith type. We''ve got an active webmaster, but he needs some help in puttin sexy prose together for the game teasers and details.
If you''re interested in that, or another position in the Clash Project, please respond here (preferred) or email me.

We got the wordsmith type, but can still use...
- more java coders (3 dedicated + a few others currently)
- someone interested in military design, esp. naval and air models
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I''d love to help out where I can. I learned to program in Java and have some fairly good experience under my belt (nothing professional, but some fairly impressive programs). What I''d be most interested in working on is the AI stuff. I''m a third year CompSci student with a strong desire to go into AI in my graduate work.
Let me know if you''re still looking for help,
