The easiest method that I know of is bitblt. It lets you do transparency and all that sort of good stuff. I''ve used it pretty easily in vb. I''m assuming there is the same function in Visual C++ so do a help search on it.
But if I was to chose a method, I''d go down the directdraw road. After you learn DD, it is all downhill from there!
Good book to learn from is Windows Game Programming For Dummies by Andre Lamothe, even though it uses directx 5.0. It''s still a great beginner book. I learned DD from it. Good luck!
