[java] Java Civ-type game project -- More Coders Needed
Advertisement
Original Post
The Clash of Civilizations is a computer strategy game that will sketch out pretty much the whole of history in game form. From its inception, the player will guide his civilization while making decisions about every aspect of its development. You''ve seen that before, of course, but one of the main goals of this project is to require less micro-management from the player (it will remain optional) One benefit of this would be the 4-hr game where you''d go from antiquity to the present while making only broad decisions. These might vary from player to player, but would include your civilization''s diplomatic stance, economy, culture, government, and overall military strategy. Our goal is to develop a fast, entertaining, and realistic game which also gives players the option to "drill down" into any area they choose, there to exert a fairly fine level of control. If you want to play everything at its finest level, you’d have a 400-hr game…
Further setting Clash apart from others in the genre, truly our "Holy Grail", is a sophisticated AI far superior to that available in the commercial games. We are putting a lot of thought and work into AI. You can see a snapshot of what
we’re doing on things like map AI onthe web page.
Current Status:
The Team of about 10 active members, is continually making progress on both the design and coding of game models for Clash. The available coders (More Needed!) are working up a series of demos showing what we have to date. We are committed to releasing a demo at every major milestone so we can get a Reality Check on how the game is working so far. We''ll make sure we keep to our promise of Reduced Micromanagement, Entertaining Gameplay, and Great AI. As of Demo 4, we now feature an alpha version of the tiled graphics and partial implementation of the new military model . Every demo is playable, although they don''t have inspiring gameplay yet ;-) Just give us a few months! The next version will feature a Much Better Diplomacy model and interface, the first implementation of the new technology model, the first shot at our new economic model, better graphics, and improved AI!
Coders, Designers, Graphics, & Interface Gurus wanted:
The Clash project is still looking for people to join. Especially needed are Java programmers attracted to this type of game, since the biggest bottleneck right now is coding.
People interested in all aspects of design are also needed to help refine our game models.
Another crucial need right now is for people interested in the military end of the game. Discussion and model refinement have been dead there for a few months. We also need graphics people (those we had for demo 4 have taken off) and playtesters. Ultimately the game will be released as shareware (free demo, pay for full version) and collaborators will earn returns depending on the amount of work they''ve put into the project (TBD).
If you''re interested in participating, or just want to see what''s going on, check out the Clash Web Site. From there you can get in the detailed overview of what we''re doing, and follow a link to our forum. If you''re interested in joining, and are Serious about doing Real Work on a dynamic game project drop me an email.
Come Check Us Out!

Hi Jim:
That is just a self-extracting exe that contains the .jar file. We were having problems with Netscape downloads since for some versions it thinks you want to Run the jar, not download it. And the app isn''t Netscape-proof in use of local resources, so Netscape said the jar was corrupted, blah, blah, blah
If you can''t get the self-extracting exe to work on your system I will happily send you the .jar. I guess we should put it up there as an option anyway...

Argh!
Been having some serious trouble getting on to your website, but I''m seriously interested in what your doing!!!
I''ve been java programming for the past >thinks< 2 years now.. tho not specifically in the game area...
But once I''ve actually been to website >kicks modem< I will probably send you an email or somesuch...
Speak to you soon,
Mark

Hey Neurotic:
Glad to hear you''re potentially interested in Clash!
Its not You
, the #$&%@# site has been down for at least 5 hours. I can''t get in either except to the ftp site...
Hopefully it''ll be back up soon.

Just getting back to the topic of whether or not this is the right place to post, I do believe that it is appropriate. I mean hey, there was a thread on how to get your web page submitted to yahoo and places like that and no one mentionned anything about that.
But in other news I''m attempting to go to your site Mark and it seems to be either down or having problems because I''ve got cable and I know it''s not on my end. As the saying goes: "Better luck next time." But I am interested in seeing what you''re doing and I definitely wish you the best of luck on it.

Sorry everyone...
The server has never been down this long, and great timing too
.
If its not up by when I get back from work I''ll put up a temp mirror site.

All: For those of you who couldn''t get through before the site''s back up.
Wrathnut:
We need pretty much everything that goes into a civ-type game... Right now the three coders are working on the military, economics, and government/social area ''guts''. By guts I mean not GUI or AI but just the basic coding to get the systems working (or more refined in the case of military and economics).
We most desperately need someone good with GUIs, and someone good with handling tiled graphics. I did both for demo 4, but they are really crude versions of each. After that its more people to code basics in areas like diplomacy or military stuff beyond what I''m doing. I also have enough of an idea about the AI framework that useful work could be done in that area also. Multiplayer coding also has nobody working on it at the moment.
So like I said, just about everything you think of in this kind of game.

Thanks for the suggestion TheEarl. Unfortunately we''ve been using JRE so that the player can just double-click on the jar. That won''t work for a zip IIRC. But if we don''t find anything better I will try your solution for the next release.

Hi Joe:
Well, the status is pretty much what it was a month ago, and you can see it at the top of this thread. The only real exception is that we now have three professional coders working on the project, and they didn''t like my 50k lines of code. They are starting with a more compartmentalized architecture, and refactoring the code starting as of a few weeks ago. So temporarily we will be taking a step back in terms of what was accomplished in the previous demos, but hopefully we''ll gain back the lost functionality over the next six weeks or so.
The current plan is to use a radical coding/design methodology and release something new every few weeks for testing.
We still have need for many more programmers, someone to handle the military area, which is pretty much fallow at the moment, and committed artists.
There is a lot more information on the current status of the code on the forum if you are interested in more details of exactly where we are.

Status report (and further grubbing for coders ;-):
The new framework that I talked about in the post above is coming along pretty well. We now have moderately decent versions of the economy and government models, and the military and map coding are coming along. We expect to be releasing our next demo in a week or two.
Currently I am planning to switch over from economy coding to technology soon, since there is no technology code at all at the moment. However, there is lots more to do on the economy, so someone here is interested in taking on technology, it would significantly speed up things. Any takers?
There are also a wide variety of other areas, such as diplomacy, that still don''t have anyone to code them. So if you''re a serious coder and are interested in joining, don''t let the fact that Technology doesn''t turn you on stop you from investigating us as a potential investment of your time! We currently have three committed coders that are really working and achieving a good rate of progress. But another one or two would make a significant difference... Let me know here, by e-mail, or on the Clash forum if you are interested.

The project definitely looks interesting, but I am a little concerned about the distribution model. A message in the forum indicates that this is a ''shareware'' project. Exactly how does it work to have a shareware project developed by volunteer programmers?

Hi Jerry:
Our business model makes every bit as much sense as any number of dot-coms that got tens or hundreds of millions of dollars out of Wall Street!
Well, the basic idea is not to take this too seriously in terms of a moneymaking project until things start really coming together. If we end up with something that is great for a hobbyist, but not really sellable, then we don''t have to worry about it... If our ultimate dreams appear to be starting to come true, then we will need to go through the painful process of allocating shares of any money we Might make, proportional to people''s sweat equity. I realize it''s potentially legally dangerous, but I''m not prepared to worry about it until we get a fairly solid alpha under our belts.

Well, we currently have 3 serious coders, plus a few more at the margins. The best of our coders is a Java Architect. But we could use Several more of the serious type! If you are good, and want to participate in an ambitious project that is going to Completion, reply here, or drop me a line.
