I lack motivation, and I cant carry through a project (at least not easy). Therefore, it is very hard for me to stick to teaching myself to program. Im going nuts. Do any of you have tips to sticking to it? Please aid me. Bam! Soy! Why I oughta...

Welcome to the real world.

99% (or more) of all hobby projects fail because people loose motivation or something alike.

Here is some tips:
1. Make you project smaller. That increases the chance that is not so overwhelming. Make a Tetris game, for instance, if you are just beginning at programming. Forget about advanced projects with all the bells and whistles that you can imagine.
2. Turn it into work. I got my game project turned into my Master''s Thesis in computer science. I have turn it in and get credit. I am motivated.
3. Think about the posibilities when you are done. Will it be the ticket to a gaming job? You life wish come true?
4. Make your project smaller. I already said this. But I will say it again because it is important.
5. Get some other people to join you, but they have other ideas so you will have to compromise. Keep each other engaged and help each other to keep your motivation.

Well Now,

Felonius gave you sound advice there Konrad. I would also add that listening to music can sometimes be inspiring or motivate you in the right ways. Well thats me fresh out, there ya go.

If you live in Canada, listen to CBC Radio Two. Classical is the most intellectually stimulating music you can possibly listen to.

OH MY GOSH! I though I was the only one who listened to music while I programmed! Another idea is that when ever you watch a movie, watch the screen and think of game ideas and stories you can get from it. I also like to think about how the music would work in a game when I am watching a movie. The movie that really got my brain boiling with game ideas was THE BEACH. The movie sucked but there are some really good things in there that could make a great game.

Another thing to do is to force yourself to do the work by setting a deadline. That always works for me. Also, keep AWAY from all the new games that are comming out. It''s really depressing to see pictures like this.

Oh wait...I shouldn''t have showed you that. Oh well...

damn that looks real...that's a screenshot from a game?!

That looks too real...Is it possible for a game to look so real that it loses some of the fantasy aspect of games?

For some reason I don''t have a problem like this. This is my first game I''m doing, and nobody in their right mind would do such a monster as their first game (you''ve guessed, I am out of my mind ) but for some reason, I love doing it. It''s just what I''ve dreamed of the last few years and I constantly get more and more motivated. I''m doing stuff that I haven''t seen in any tutorials and I even made a step back voluntarily - I didn''t think my graphics engine kicked ass so I just dumped it (after a few months work - that was including learning DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectInput though) and restarted doing the whole thing. Meanwhile I''ve got 2 more programmers, too.
OK, we''re a 7 people team and I have loads of people in ICQ that I talk about game development with and who I exchange demos/test versions with - that helps a lot too. It''d kinda be stupid to be asked one day "how''re you getting on with your game?" - "Umm... we dumped it!".
I''ve been told by many people to give up but I know I can do it, even if it''s a lot of work. dunno where I''m getting the motivation from, progress is slow (I don''t have much time to program) but I often think that this may be the last chance in my life to do something like this. Who knows when I''ll die and what kind of job I get?
(by the way, I''ve been working on this in some way for over a year. Programming started in December but I had to learn DirectX and find out what you can do with it. I dumped the old stuff about 6 weeks ago - after that we miraculously got more programmers)

whoops this got a bit long - anyway:

Well, the moral of all this?
Probably "get in touch with people". There''s nothing better than a crowd of people who keep asking about new screenshots and stuff.

Also, whenever I sit at the PC I listen to music. When you just can''t think of a solution simply switch to your favourite song. You won''t believe how that works.

And, as many people have said, only do something you know you can definitely do (I didn''t but I don''t have this "project droppping problem") and nevertheless make it challenging. I know, every project is somewhat challenging but you need to do something you really have to think about a lot - ideally, something you haven''t done before. Of course, don''t overdo it.

Just my €0.02 (payment isn''t what it used to be, eh? )
