What is caching. When people are talking about their 3D engines they often talk about texture caching or surface caching so what is it and what is it good for?

You basically store something that you need you''ll be using again in memory (so you can access it quickly). For example, your webbrowser probably has a caching function in it. Whenever you visit a website, it stores the HTML page and all the images in it on your harddrive, so whenever you wish to visit the same website again, the browser simply has to fetch the website from your harddrive (which is much faster than sending it over the internet ). It''s probably the same thing for textures: take often used textures and store them in memory and read them from there instead from the harddrive whenever you want to use them.
I'm reminded of the day my daughter came in, looked over my shoulder at some Perl 4 code, and said, "What is that, swearing?" - Larry Wall
