Ok. This is a big project of mine and I am ready to post my first ever post here. I am planning on making a Sports-Sim that is raw data. Lots and Lots of text and stats. Lots of math and such needed. I am planning on putting nice backgrounds in too but I am not sure. I am stuck between 3 programming languages to use. Which ones are best for a text/data/quick to learn (not important) type sim. Visual C++, Visual Basic, or Delphi. I am a beginner (advanced beginner in C++) in all programming languages except HMTL which I am a pro. Which of these will allow me to learn the language thouroughly and get the game done within 1 and 1/2 years at the most. If you know of another that is easy to learn but I have not listed and won''t cost me more than $200, (I have found VC++ etc. for under $200, some are used however). So please reply I am very desperate for professional advice!!!

Another question does anyone use Delphi??? And I would like more advice on the programming language, to choose. A note about the game: If you like football you will LOVE this game. I know someone that made a Pro Football text sim as a hobby and now he has made a career out of it and he made $20,000 with his first version. And the only graphics in text sports-sims are backgrounds and thats only if you want to use them. They aren''t a need. But it would make the game look nicer...

Don''t even start the "VB Sucks" thing here. I can see it comming. Just don''t forget about Captured Reality kid.

Yeah, leave VB alone. The "VB sucks" discussion is just like the D3D vs. OGL discussion. It usually ends in a flame war and never gets anywhere.
AND, STVOY, you can make it nice and graphical with any other programming language that supports a decent graphics API (or even only the GDI) there''s no need for C/C++ there.
Anyway, I''d say VB is very capable of handling MS Access databases (easily!) but other than that I''d say you use the language that appeals to you most.

Ok I have almost decided to use C++ since it is a *tad* bit cheaper and I know it better. But, would the VB development time be shorter even though I don''t really know it or would C++ be quicker with my further knowledge, OR would they be about the same. If they would be about the same which would be more useful down the road....

VB might be faster, but C/C++ is cooler.
j/k

it''s good you put a j/k at the end. or you were gonna get flamed by both C++ and VB programmers

If you''re gonna deal with lots of text, I''d use VB, just cause I never had fun with text in C++, even if I used string tables and stuff. VB has easy to use text functions for string manipulation, so that''s what I''d go with, however if you''re easy with text in C++, then use that, cause in the end it''ll run better.

VB is horrible with strings. Use Perl for string parsing/formatting/whatever.

If you haven''t bought VB or VC++ yet, and you''re making your decision on what to use based on price, why not get them both and see which you like to use better? Find a college student who can get it for you at the college bookstore. Most of them offer these programs for a VERY low price! I got the Visial Studio 6.0 Proffesional for only $25 at the IU bookstore. $25!! You can''t beat that for VC++, VB, Visual Java, and other tools.
(If you''re REALLY going for price, I recommend a variant of GCC, such as DJGPP or Cygwin; the cost of a GCC compiler is exactly $0.00, and can be downloaded online.)

btw, not a good thing to mention at a gamedevish place.

I have decided that with what I am wanting to do and how complicated it will get at times VC++ 6.0 is my road. Basically because I am taking a *class* about it and I have covered quite a bit. It will have a tool to use for a while and my friend I talked about earlier said he used VC++ and MFC. I must admit I''m new to C++ but I was told by a lot of people on some other site (don''t remember it) that a text-based game like a sports sim would be a great starting point and a good challenge. I hope I can get a good product out. I don''t plan to make a career out of this but if my game does turn out well with whoever I have testing it I plan to sell it for $15 ($10 lower than the average sim). I like to think of it as a hobby that you can make some money off of it. Thanks to everyone who replied to my post and Good Luck on your own projects.
